NBraz
Hi guys, I've decided to upgrade my rather old 7800GTX that is setting me back when dealing with high polycount. I can get a used 8800GTS (G80) for 70€ and softmod it to Quadro or i can get the HD4870 for 120€. What do you think would be the best choice regarding price/performance. Money is a problem here Regards
SandmanNinja
I like the 8800, don't know anything about the HD4870. But it's been my experience when you upgrade older hardware with a single piece of new hardware: something else rears its ugly head. "Geez, I just fixed my video to handle higher poly scenes but now I keep getting weird errors because I don't have much ram..."
NBraz
Thanks for your quick reply SandmanNinja! Right now the only thing it's setting me back a little is my 7800GTX. It's on a Q8200 and 8GB ram. Only viewport rendering on heavy geometry scenes is starting to get a little annoying. But, yes, i understand what you're saying :-) For the money i have available i think the 8800GTS is a good choice, but will the improvements be noticeable taking in account the 7800GTX? SandmanNinja
Not sure - does your motherboard support both video cards? Your system does sound 'beefy' enough to handle the rest of poly heavy scenes. I was working on a million+ poly scene of a spaceship and each time I'd try to zoom in to work on some detail, the screen would go to the 'boxy' version and I could no longer tell what I was trying to zoom in on. I tried it for 2 days and then went out and got an nvidia 8600 (this was a couple of years ago).
NBraz
Well, usually this workstation only "complains" dealing with 2million-3million polygon scenes. I can also get a Radeon 2600pro 512mb DDR3 for 30€ and softmod it to Firegl 5600 - Pretty cheap... Or is this a step back from my current 7800GTX? Looking at specviewperf 10 3dsmax 04 scores doing the 2600 softmod gives around 32 points, pretty similar score from that of the Quadro FX4500. NBraz
Ok, i've got a HD3870 for 70€. Let's see what happens
Zdravko Barisic
GF 260/280/275.....is the minimum if you want to feel the big diference comparing with 7800, cause 8800 or 9800 are not so much faster in MAX. What about your workflow?
NBraz
Well actually i went and bought a used HD4670 for 45€ some months ago... A bargain... But then again as you said there's a slight (not big) performance increase in max. For now it suits my workflow. Still saving for GF 260/280/275 :-)
