Help me to choose a new notebook...

Recommended Posts

Hallo to everyone...

Long time no post... my life has a bit changed..

Now I'm re-starting my job in arch-viz and need do implement my hardware.

I have a desktop pc ( HP with a 6700 core duo and a ATI Radeon 1650 -quite old, bought two years ago with 4mb Ram)

Now I need a newer pc, a bit more powerful but I need the portability (expecially at home/study, from one room to another) and not to spend too much.

I was considering this one

DELL XPS 1730 - Processore Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9500 (2,60 GHz, FSB 800 MHz ,cache L2 6 MB)Dual SLI™ 512MB nVidia® GeForce™ 9800GT graphics card , ram 4mb DDRII

with a 17" TFT UltraSharp™ WUXGA (1920x1200)

the price is 2000 euro (no VAT)

But I have some doubt with having a 17" notebook... four years ago I bought a Clevo 17" , a wonderful machine, but VERY noisy and hot... and at home I still have a monitor Samsung LCD 21", very clean and sharp--

I was considering of buiying a 15,4" instead, in order to pay less and (perhaps) have a bit more power...

I also had this other offer:

SANTECH ( is an italian reseller of barebone CLEVO) N48

CPU Intel Core 2 Duo P9700 2.80 GHz (DC, 6Mb, 25W, 64bit)

RAM 4 Gb DDR III 1.066MHz (2x2.048Mb)

DISPLAY 15,4" WSXGA+ 1.680x1.050 NO-Glare IPS

VGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1 Gb GDDR3 dedicati

for 1550 euro (no VAT)

__________

Now I don't know what to do.. the Dell or the Santech ? I should consider other brands?

A 17" notebook is now less noisy and portable than 4 years ago?

please help me, and thanks for reading a such long post!

my budget is around 2000 euro...

I know that desktop are more powerful... but now i STRONGLY need a second computer...

with a notebook AND a desktop I could finally have more power and a rendering slave... and I could use DR at last...

My hp desktop could be a good rendering slave , in my opinion...

now I want a notebook that works good with max, with lots of ram and a good video card, I suppose...

I need a notebbok .. I have one small baby at home and often I need to move from one room to another ;)

thanks for the reply

Thanks for your reply---

i honestly only ever had problems with my dell xps. overheating, battery life, graphics performance dropping off.

My husband has a DELL 1530 XPS and never had a problem... but I read lot of problems with 17" ...

you have a 1730? The precision are really pricey... I have an estimate on a 15,4" and is over 2000 euros...

This is why I'm starting to look at the macbook...

I am not an expert, but I have had 4 Clevos in the last 8 years. My best advise is to stay away from Clevo. The last laptop I bought from Sager was very expensive, I bought it 10 months ago and it is already broken.

Upon receiving the unit I noticed the battery will only last like 15 minutes. I also noticed the laptop was slower than my old Dell. Now if I put the battery on it, the unit will not work nor it will charge the battery.

I have four laptops accumulated during the last 5 years. One Toshiba, two Dells and the latest Sager. The Toshiba and the Dell's are working with no problems and the Sager/Clevo is not working. The Sager/Clevo is slow and the screen is not bright enough. Upon calling Sager they tell me the brightness is normal. My opinion is that it is not normal.... all my other laptops have better screens.

The Sager / Clevo sells two different types of Screen LCD. One is call the UXVGA sor something like that. Be carefull with that screen. The letters and Icons are too small. If you try to make them bigger then they will become fuzzy.

In general, the computer is too slow, not bright, noisy, and has power issues.

Good Luck

Elliot

I have owned compaq, sony, and asus notebooks. I have worked on several HPs, and a dell or two.

My order of preference in these brands would be as follows:

1. Sony

2. Asus

3. Dell

4. Compaq

5. HP

I will say that I didn't really have any bad experiences with any of them, but the Sony has stood out as well above the rest. They can get pricey, but to their testament it seems that a lot of that money goes into better components, stuff you usually wouldn't even consider when buying a notebook/laptop. My asus is fairly new, but I still prefer to work on the 4 year old Sony.

One other manufacturer worth mention would be lenovo.

I too would like to replace an aging laptop, but budget is less than 500 UK Pounds(as you can get a quad core for that, but would ideally like some kind of mini(pocket size) ITX computer with seperate tablet screen, normal keyboard & Mouse of choice, seperate dvd and other add-ons.

Mainly for use in home as media PC / web, but could be used at gigs or in car or on travels,

but would be nice if it was at least as powerfull as a dual core, if not a quad....

then i might be happy.

any ideas?

Thanks to all...

I've still lots of doubts...

a GOOD notebook is a pricey option, I think, in any case.

The Sony option is good ... but they really cost too much, in my opinion...

I am seriously thinking to switch to a MACbook PRO...

price 2000 euro ... very good hardware, fabulos 17" screen, not noisy at all....

I am a bit frightened ... but I see lot of studies working with MAC and cinema4d or max on bootcamp... and thay says that it's all wanderful...

mah

I'll write a specific post

thanks again
