Light under lamp?

Hi,

I'm an architecture student about to begin my 4th year and I've been using max and mental ray for about a year for my projects. I used to render my models using vray (in sketchup, then in max), but ultimately I found mental ray in max to be the most intuitive for me and also the better looking.

I've always rendered lighting fixtures using an emissive material on the actual fixture, but the results are severely lacking, from an aesthetic standpoint. I'd like to be able to get the "halos" under the light fixtures like I see in some renders (like the ones below) so I'd like some advice from you guys. What's the best way to do it with mental ray?

Well, I use Vray, but there isn't much difference in the use....Create your light as a photometric rather than standard light. I typically would set it to a target light. Under "light distribution (type)" select "photometric web". Then under "distribution (photometric web)" select the ies file that you would like to use. These can be downloaded from many lighting sites.

IES files and photometric lights, in general, provide real life lighting calculations to provide real life results. Make sure your scene is in real life scale as well. These lights will work much like a real light bulb in a real space ie. a 50W photometric light will not light up a 50,000 sq ft room!

How can I attache and IES file to this post??
