andyH
Hi everyone, hoping someone can help me out here. In my scene I have the lighting how I want it but the trim (baseboard and picture rail) are showing some unatural highlights on the far left wall, the area looks like its glowing and is even creating refelctions in the wall paint. I have tried multiple things to try and fix this, including changing material reflectivity and messing around with object properties but I just cant get rid of it. Using an ArchDesign material. Lighting is skylight/direct light and mr skyportals. Any insight as to why this is happening would be appreciated. amer abidi
well its obvious that one of your skyportals is shooting light right though some of your geometry(the decorative plaster panels), so i'd start there: 1- to confirm this theory, i would turn off the skyportal of the left window and see if i still get those streaks of light. 2- if confirmed, then i would go right through to the panels themselves (geometry). Might be a simple case of flipping normals (faces) Ok, i wont consider other possibilities without having the scene, because im sure its not a material issue. I am almost certain its a geometrical/normal/faces issue with the modeling of those panels. If you remodelled them in CAD, and flipping sides and (or) merging vertices doesnt work, then try remodelling them within max.. a simple loft (or even an extrude) would do in this case. andyH
Many thanks for the reply Amer, I had also considered geometry as the problem and have ruled that out as far as I can with my limited knowledge. Also the problem still exists when the portals are off. I have had some success by moving the mrSun (I have re-lit the scene with daylight system). Oddly the position of the sun has a direct effect on the problem. So it would seem that the geometry is at fault, but as far as I can tell all the normals are good and I cant find any randome vertices or any other geometrical problems. Moving the sun has done the job, but as I am learning I would really like to know what the problem is, I may not be able to move the sun next time . amer abidi
You''re absolutely right in wanting to find the problem. your quick fix might have worked now, but it's not a solution really. If you post the scene i'll be happy to look at it in my free time. Anyway, Mental Ray is amazing.. good luck taming it though
andyH
Thanks Amer, I will need to strip out one of the commercial models and tidy up the layers a bit, and I will be happy to post it for comments about all aspects of the scene, including my clumsy modelling . Its a max 2010 file, if that will work for you.
