Quad CPU's - What's the difference?

Recommended Posts

Outside of overall processor speed, what is the difference in the CPU's? Is there a clear-cut fav?

My wifey's comp fried and instead of buying her a new computer and pillaging from my current quad to build my new one, I may just buy a new quad CPU for myself and give her my entire old computer. I currently have the q6600.

I have a Q6600 and an i7. I paid almost the same (maybe a little cheaper) for my i7 a few months ago than what I paid for my quad core a year and a half ago.

The i7 emulates an 8-core chip, thanks to the magic of true hyperthreading (and other 'stuff'), so you'll get 8 buckets scooting around your screen.

Core 2 Quad chips newer than yours are faster and use less power, but as Joel said the i7 is newer and better. Get one of those. They're not showing up in your Newegg search, so look here instead.

Even the 920 model will render faster than a much more expensive Core 2 Quad in most software.

what to pack in with i7 920?....... i just searched and there are newer ones available than 920... are they any better.. cost wise they are almost double the 920...... I actually am at a point where i have to trade off between more ram or a better graphics card. the balance is 6gb DDR3 ram and a GTX 275 card. I personally want to lower the card config and increase the ram to 12gb. will that be good?.... pls help and shed some light :)

Yes, spending less on video card and more on ram will be helpful for most of these purposes. As for the i7 chips - the render speed will be directly proportional to the GHz of the i7 chip you choose. E.g., a 20% increase in GHz is a 20% increase in render speed. (This only applies when talking about chips from the same line and generation - which all current i7's are.) So whether a more expensive one is worth the money is up to you and your requirements.

which video card would u then suggest AJLynn?....... GTX series or maybe something lower in order..... Please help. I read reviews for 12 gb DDR3 rams and they were not that encouraging, at least not in the indian scenario. What do u suggest?.... please advice... thank you in advance and for the reply above ;)

Agreed. I have an 8800GT in my Q6600 and a 9800GT in my i7. A gig of video ram in each.

There was about a $400 price differnce between the 920 and the next i7 up, and the only seeming difference was the clock speed. And I overclocked my i7 to the 'natural' speed of the next higher version up for 'free'. No extra cooling fans or anything and it runs nice and stable.
