Podge
Hi, I'd like if someone can clarify something for me. I've used DR or backburner on various jobs at work. Today I got to render a still at 5000x2344 and to get it out asap, but I also have other work to be completed for tomorrow morning. Now I can send the render to a colleges pc through backburner but it'll take longer than I want it to take to render. Or I can use DR too pick up 6 xeons but I want DR to be issued that job, say in an hour or so when we are on lunch. Has anyone got DR to render through backbuner? This is ideally for future tasks when I'm not in the studio but I can monitor from a remote location. Thanks in advance...
Devin Johnston
DR only works on the computer you are working on at the time it's not possable to use it with BB. However you can basically do the same thing in BB by selecting "split scan lines" and defining how many strips you want the machines to render. If I have 10 machines available I usually split the job into 20 strips so that each machine renders two strips. Don't forget to at least have the strips overlap by at least 1 pixel or it won't work properley.
BrianKitts
I thought that in the latest release vray was supposed to be able to DR through backburner which it originally never could.... but I've never had any luck with it, normally the buckets from the DR nodes through backburner come back black. I've been in the same situation..... what I did was to launch the render on my machine using DR w/ a couple extra machines contributing, and then gone into the task manager on my machine and turned off the affinity on the max instance for all but one processor. This leaves once processor on your machine running max assembling the image from the 30 etc.. cores running DR. and leaves your other 7 cores free to work locally. Another note.... if you try the split scan line route.... I've never gotten it to work rendering out to an EXR file, backburner would always error out when it tries to reassemble the image... I've only been successful rendering out to jpg. Otherwise you have to manually stitch the image back together.
Devin Johnston
That used to happen to me as well before they updated BB now it works like a charm.

I just tried it again and it failed using 2008.1.
Devin Johnston
Strange, the split scan line works fine for me now, a few years ago when I was using Max 9 I had this problem but since we've been using Max 2009 I haven't seen it. A work around that usually worked was once the job was finshed and the machine that was supposed to stitch them together had failed I would select a different machine and that would usually work. Podge
Ok I can see I'll be pulling my hair out to try and get BB to work with DR. So another solution might be to use 3rd party software for DR, say like Dr. Que. Has anyone managed to get the Doc to work 3dsmax let alone Vray. Again, thank you for your help...
