Spooner04
Louis Kahn. Probably the best American Architect. http://www.greatbuildings.com/architects/Louis_I._Kahn.html I pick him over Frank Lloyd Wright because Wright played to many games with his spaces. Big, Small, Narrow, Big, Low Ceiling. It feels odd, kind of like a 1000 island dressing of spaces. Edited July 30, 2009 by Spooner04

Sawyer
I think its impossible to comment on architecture that you have only seen in books so I can't really comment on Kahn's work but I have been to many F.L.W. buildings and I just love them! I think he has to be one of the most influential American artists of the 20th century. I can't really see where spooner is coming from on that. Spooner04
I've been to both FLW and Kahn's buildings. Its really just a difference in taste. FLW is an amazing architect, and is probably the most influential in America. Just not the best in my opinion. There are many, many personality issues. Very controlling and not as much theory behind his work. Kahn was more about letting the purpose of the building or material dictate the design. I like that approach more. Kind of a more holistic thinking maybe. If you can get ahold of a movie called "my architect" I would recommend at least one viewing. Perhaps FLW/Kahn is a little like the debate between Elvis and the Beatles, both were awesome but it depends a lot on personal taste and even what mood you are in. I looked up some Kahn quotes just for grins. http://thinkexist.com/quotes/louis_kahn/ one of my favs: “A Work of Art ... is not a living thing ... that walks or runs. But the making of a life. That which gives you a reaction. To some it is the wonder of Man's Fingers. To some it is the wonder of the Mind. To some it is the wonder of Technique. And to some it is how Real it is. To some, how Transcendent it is. i've got way to much free time. I need to find something to do and stop looking at forums.
illegalalieninbeijing
Louis Kahn. Probably the best American Born Architect. There are lot of architects that moved here and have had practices here from other countries. I thought Louis Kahn was born in Eastern Europe and migrated to the United States? But I do admire Louis Kahn for his geometric use of concrete. Just facinating and one of my personal heroes while studying architecture. His bio-film/documentary was also astonishing - My Architect ( 2003 ).
Spooner04
Alas, you are correct. I fail at Louis Kahn apparently. Mistake corrected. From wiki-pedia Louis Kahn, whose original name was Itze-Leib (Leiser-Itze) Schmuilowsky (Schmalowski), was born into a poor Jewish family in Kuressaare on the Estonian island of Saaremaa, then part of the Russian Empire. trino
besides an architect, he is a theorist, isn´t he?? (Lebbeus Woods) , and an artist too. Yes, his readings are quite incredible, i love to read them from time to time, love his theory. Talking about mexican architects, i like Bernardo Gomez Pimienta (BGP) and Enrique Norten (TEN architects) a lot. http://www.bgp.com.mx http://www.ten-arquitectos.com
