owieczka
Hello CGI specialists! That's my first post at this forum, so first of all I'd like to say hello to everybody and also I'd like to say that I really admire your knowledge I'm a beginner and I just thought some of you may be able to help me with a problem I'm facing when I'm trying to render something in Sketchup / V-ray. I've done couple of renderings of a really complex models and this one is very simple and not too big. But when I start rendering a 'runtime error' appears and I don't know why. I have never had this problem before... Sometimes it helps when I switch off a layer with v-ray lights I've placed on my scene, but what if I really need them? Also all the textures I'm using are pretty small. There is not that much reflections, no bump / displacement maps... I've been trying to find an answer to this question for months already and unfortunately nothing helps... I've uninstalled V-ray and Sketchup, I have installed all the latest updates... and sometimes everything works properly, sometimes it doesn't. It would be really great if you could give me any advice. Thank you in advance!
cadmunkey
If its a complex scene its more than likely a memory error. Unfortunately Vray4SU is limited by Google sketchups own memory limitations and if your scene is too complex it will just crash out. That is one of the major downsides to the render package. If google ever spend any time making proper advancements with sketchup Im guessing version 8 will be 64bit compatible and also be able to handle much larger polygon counts, but if its anything like version 7 I wouldnt hold your breath!! *edit* Also try the Vray forum here: http://forum.asgvis.com/
owieczka
Hello Cadmunkey, thanks for your response. I agree in 100% - memory limitations and bugs are the major disadvantage of Sketchup. To be honest - I was expecting version 7 to be 64-bit compatible, but unfortunately it is not, so I hope version 8 will have all these things fixed... Fingers crossed... This particular model is quite small actually, but I've just found out what the reason of my problems is- if I switch off all V-ray lights, I can render it in very high resolution and everything works. But obviously it looks very dark and there is no point of rendering such a gloomy image... I just exported the whole model to Cinema 4d and I used c4d to render my views, but anyway - it's a shame that I can't render my scene in Sketchup with V-ray... (I don't have V-ray for c4d). Thank you very much for your help; at least I know now, that complex models with too many lights shouldn't be done in SU Thanks, have a good evening! cadmunkey
Just out of interest how big (mb) is the model file?
owieczka
Hey - it's 16MB. I managed to render much bigger models in Sketchup, so I thought this one shouldn't be a problem...
cadmunkey
I ask because I always seem to get memory problems with models around the 40mb - 50mb mark. I use 64bit Vista but it seems xp users dont have the same problem because it uses less base memory.
owieczka
I have 32-bit XP at work and 64-bit XP at home. I rendered 60MB models on my machine at work, but those were just external shots (no V-ray lights, no heavy textures, no bump / displacement maps). That's why I was so surpriced when I had problems with such a simple 16MB model. But it seems like V-ray lights are just too much for Sketchup and unfortunately I can't switch them off because that's an internal shot and it would look really bad without any lights... I tried to render this scene on my home computer (64-bit XP, 4GB RAM, Quad 2.67) and I had the same problem... I think Sketchup + Vray are perfect for white block not too heavy models and maybe more for externals, but not for interiors. Thanks a lot for your help
cadmunkey
Katarzyna I havent really helped you, I'm just curious why some people have memory problems and some dont. The reason I'm interested is I have an exterior render I am working on at the moment that is crashing a whole lot and I'm trying to figure out why. cadmunkey
Actually one thing you can try is render your output to a vrimage file rather than the frame buffer. Do this by going to options then to the 'output' tab and tick the Render to VRImage box and choose a file location and name for your render. When you render out now it will render to a file - this is typically used for large resolution files (4000px+) but it also keeps memory usage right down so may help your scene in this case. Once you have the VRImage file you need to convert it, you can get the software download for free from AVGIS. It's a pain, but maybe a workaround for your scene.
