3darchitect
So, I'm doing an independent project to practice exporting from Sketchup to Max for rendering. I've become very comfortable with how Sketchup models so I'd like to stick with it, seeing as how I am the quickest at modeling with it. My problem is that I have two "half-pipe" roofs that are intersecting, and I can't figure out how to model it properly. I have both pieces, but since Sketchup doesn't model in solids, I can't subtract one form the other to create the opening. I know this is easy in AutoCAD, but I tried importing the masses from Sketchup, and it wouldn't work. Is there any way to do this in Sketchup? or will I have to try and recreate the shapes in AutoCAD then import those to Sketchup? (I'd really prefer not to have to do that). cadmunkey
You can solve this by making one curve a group then right clicking on it and intersect with model, it will cut through the other curve which will allow you to edit it properly. You may need to make a couple of copies of each curve to practice with till you get the desired cut section.
cadmunkey
You can also get some very useful ruby addon scripts for sketchup which will make your life alot easier and your modelling even faster. Some ruby scripts are free, some come with a small charge. I found the script that would do what you require here: http://www.smustard.com/script/BoolTools
stee
Model it in Sketchup, its actually very straightforward. When you select the arc tool to draw the curve itself, you can see in the bottom right corner "Sides: 12". This is the default. Change this to something bigger, like 100. A 12 sided arc is all well and good in a large sketchup scene where you are trying to keep a low-poly count, but for something like this which will be exported to max, it is important when intersecting arcs, for each of them to have a lot of edges. Once both shapes are drawn and in position, select all, and hit Edit > Intersect > with model. This will draw lines along the intersection. Delete whats is not needed and this will leave you with the desired shape. Sorry I attempted to attach an example but cannot until i reach 10 posts. I will edit and attach once I've reached the post count. EDIT: the attchments seem to have worked. See the difference between 100 sides and 4 sides?
