Jeff Mottle
Wow, what a nightmare day this has been. Got my system back last night but found out that a feature I would like to use in Acronis True Image (disc mirroring app) requires W7 Ultimate. I purchased Vista Business a month ago, which means my W7 is not compatable as it upgrades to Vista Professional. So I have to purchase W7 again as there is no upgrade path from Professional to Ultimate. WTF! Three hours of phone calls to Microsoft and local retailers to actually find someone who has a copy in stock. I find one and go to pick it up and install a clean copy on my new drives. That took only 10 min, but wait! Now the key provided in the box does not work. 90 minutes on the phone with Microsoft I find out that you can't do a clean install and use that license key, even though the install booklet in the box says you can. As it turns out you have to install W7 as a clean install and then install over top of itself as an upgrade. Only then will the license key work. Oh and that "upgrade" process takes about 90 minutes even on SSDs. So anyone who is debating between a retail version and an upgrade, just buy the upgrade as you apparently don't need to provide any proof of a previous version. Whoever came up with this new install process must have been on crack. Great so now I can install my apps...wrong...my mouse dies and the right mouse button does not work and a quick glance at my XM radio tuner that I use in my office apparently dead too. The screen brightness does not work and I can hardly see the screen. Looks like yet another replacement (this will be #2 in the last 10 months). To add insult to injury the online store I had planned to launch in about 2 weeks will be yet further delayed as I found out that my setup is not PCI compliant (a requirement to process credit cards). I was told it was, but now I have to reinstall all of my CGA servers again....and pay about $500+ a month more. What's next a meteor hitting my house. Seriously how many more things can go wrong in one day!

SandmanNinja
Mate... wow. I recently read about some upgrade path fubars and Microsoft was scrambling to fix it. "My upgrade failed in [the] last step. And now it is in [a] continuous loop," complained another user with the screen name Manjigani. I had a lot more links yesterday but cant find them now. Jeff Mottle
For those interested here are the disc performance numbers I received on W7 with the new Patriot 128GB M28 series drives in a RAID 0 configuration.

I could say how easy it is to upgrade OSX using Time Machine and Migration Assistant, but it would sound like I was just mocking Jeff.

I have a Mac too (my laptop), but there is a lot of stuff that does not work on a mac. I do use Parallels, but performance is not that great for some apps. At least on my laptop. I do know how much nicer a mac is....
