Stan Zaslavsky
Hi all, a new project for your feedback and C&C. i've been asked by the client to do this special brick texture - of three rows rough brick and one row smooth - still working on how to visualise that - anyone use mr displacement effectively in multi-sub objects? look forward to your comments thanks a bunch Edited August 13, 2009 by StanZ
Nate
I'd model each row of bricks seperately i.e. 2 rows of textured then 1 row smooth and then stack them. If your using displacement it should cover any joins that might appear.

WAcky
Heya Stan! It's been a while Your trees are looking great! Onyx right? Mine are terrible... The things that stand out to me: The sky is a bit unconvincing. I'd try http://www.cgtextures.com, grab some good skys and comp them in with Photoshop. You're lacking shadows on your comped grass. I can't remember whether Mental Ray will do a shadow pass? Either way if you can get a shadow pass out of mental ray, make a matte pass of the grass plane, and use that matte as a mask in Photoshop for some shadows on your grass. I'm not too sure about the light interiors atm... I think that thick fence is a little off-putting too. There are plenty of ways to make a that brick texture. Theyre a bit hard to explain. I've PM'd you. Anyway the new render is looking great. Keep it up. I'm trying to get my head around night shots atm
Stan Zaslavsky
Hi all, James - you're an absolute champ - i got the brick texture happening. Gradient Ramp is my new friend. It's still not quite there yet - but its happening. Also agree on the shadows overlays and i've brought in a new sky - hope this one is more compelling Look forward to your comments
SandmanNinja
Hey Mate! Good looking house of unusual design. Is each 'unit' or section it's own object, or did you make some zig-zag wall paths? The big gate I see and understand, but there is a secondary smaller wooden gate that seems to be in front of a solid brick wall. Is that where the rubbish bins go? (Out of sight, out of mind...) If so, would it look more realistic (and reveal their purpose) if you stuck some rubbish bins in there? Are those tree reflections in the front windows? Wonder if a sky reflection would be better looking? Could you drop the sky map into the reflection map? Nice attention to detail with the mail slots on the front. Good job. Do you have any furniture that you could drop inside those rooms? If they have the power connected, then they're probably gonna move some of their furniture in. What did you use for the lady in the yard?
Stan Zaslavsky
Hey Sandman, thanks for the kind words. it is a collection of 4 units and all of them with different textured walls. you're right with the second gate - thats for the bins - in terms of putting bins in there - i'll see if i can find some. i was thinking of getting some furniture into upstairs rooms - but the client is happy without them - so i'm not sure if i need to add more - because he likes less "stuff" than more. lady in the yard is from Axyz - 3d people. in medium distances they look good. all the best,
Stan Zaslavsky
here is one more update to the image - a bit more detail with furniture and foliage.
SandmanNinja
It looks great! The furniture in the rooms just adds that 'pop' to it. The other car parked at the gate looks good, too. Nice environmental reflections in the car, too. Loving the windows now. The client should love it, mate. Fantastic job.
WAcky
Hi Stan, The image is coming along very well. It's got a lot more 'mood' now. I think the small palms are looking a tad over saturated. When you do the next render, give the green material in your material editor a material ID and set it up in PSD-manager so you can use it as a pass in conjunction with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to change its colour in post. Even if you think the colour is right, its a good practice one for ya. PM if you have an issue with getting psd-man to do what you want. I think your shadows might be a bit too blue. You might want to try adjusting this in PS with a colour balance adjustment layer. You could either see if that function works well enough by itself or try putting your shadow pass in the layer mask for the adjustment layer... Keep it up! Stan Zaslavsky
Thanks guys - excellent feedback. this has been the most detailed exterior i've ever done to date - so its cool seeing it come up nice. i might even try render it for night vision for my own portfolio WAcky - i'll try setting up the green for the palms - good suggestion. psd-man rocks any other things that stand out like a sore thumb? cheers,
WAcky
any other things that stand out like a sore thumb? Well nothing as big as a sore thumb but if you want more then sure The fenced area at the front gate that is for the bins looks like its open just a tad? If it is and not my imagination, it annoys me a tad Your walls should have capping like in this image (the dark strip at the top) but make sure to check with the client incase he's got some other capping style going on... The glass on your balcony should have some visible fixing system, but this is a pretty small detail. Tops of the brick work would probably not have a rendered/flat finish but that might be specified in your documentation The pailing fence could be stepped like in reality. Again, another small detail. I do this by using the array tool. I still think you could use a better sky. This ones ok and it might be the angle you're using that restricts your choice of usable sky plates. Consider changing up the sun angle and compare a few of them. Is the step-up into the garages correct? Should the paving subtly move up to meet the ground level? The grass could be bushier around the fence to the bottom right and to the left in the empty lot. This is probably a lot more work than it's worth... Have you got those bricks being displaced in the latest render? I can't really tell if they are or not. We might have to come up with a new material if it's not performing well enough. The shadow at the bottom of the pailing fence on the right should probably meet up with the fence itself. I know this was an issue with the method I showed you but it's a bit distracting... Well that's everything that I can spot and to tell you the truth I doubt I would fix half of them. Almost all of these your client won't spot and no doubt he's already very happy with it! Talk soon, James
