WAcky
Personally I recommend Batzal Roof Designer. Its a plugin that costs $35 and once you get the hang of it, it's great. Well worth the money IMO and it will make roofs in 2 minutes that would take you 30 mins to make manually. As with everything, you should try the demo first in case there is a compatibility issue with your system, or if you just don't like it. If this is not what you're interested in, there have been a few topics covering tiled roofs. One of them a few months back was pretty extensive. Try the search function. Ausmax
Hi James, Re: Batzal Roof Designer plugin - where can I find information, tutorials on how to use this plugin. How did you learn it. The one tutorial that I have come across happens too quickly and the res. of the tut. is so bad that I can't see the menu, controls as they go through the tool. I would appreciate any info. that you can give on this topic. Thanks
WAcky
Theres included tutorials with the installer and the help file should be more than enough to get you going... Not much help out on the web but the included stuff was enough for me to get started.

Not much help out on the web but the included stuff was enough for me to get started. Yes, I managed to get over my frustration and it has been enough to get me up and running. Just another question if you wouldn't mind. Could you tell me what contrain slope direction does? Thanks for getting back to me Cheers
WAcky
well it lets you define which way each face on the roof is facing. If you're doing roofs with multiple sides then you have to define which way each face slopes otherwise it wont work.
Peter M. Gruhn
Well, the final roof is pretty nasty looking, but I made the pretty one at the top similarly. Give you some ideas to work with at least. I got the basic start froma tutorial on the web. http://www.hwb.com/gruhn/3d/tilerooftut.html
Ausmax
James, Peter and all, I found some documentation. yeh! The documentation file can found in "Additional help" under the max help menu as well as in the help directory inside Max´s installation directory. Thanks Peter, I will take a look Cheers
jsf
Ok, here is the trick with batzal roof designer. Create your roof geometry first. It can be a single sided plane or an extrusion. I make each slope a separate poly (makes contolling UVW maps easy). Select the poly, on the modify tab in Max, add the "Batzal Roof Designer" modifer. In the Batzal rollout under Global Parameters click the bar "Get Shape From Stack". Click Yes at the prompt. The poly will revert from being a flattened plane back to it's original sloped shape. Check the box "Put Shingles" under the Shingles Parameters header and click the "Build Covers and Shingles" bar. Your roof geometry is created. Change the settings under Shingles Mesh and hit the "Build Covers and Shingles" button for a different configuration. I find this method much easier than the one on the video tutorial.
