gsscott50@hotmail.com
Hello, I am currently working on an animation where I need to show a bespoke desk clad in perforated aluminum with an LED back light. I have set up an aluminum shader with an opacity map and I am pretty happy with it aesthetically, however, the render times are rubbish! The opacity map along with the necessary AA settings are really killing the frame times. Does anyone have any tips for a work around for this kind of problem? Am I doing it all wrong? btw, I am using Mental Ray in Max 2009, but I thought I would post here as it's not really a MR specific problem. I appreciate your help in advance. mattclinch
opacity map? you'd probably be better off using a cutout map in an a&d shader..
gsscott50@hotmail.com
Yes, that is the method I have used. The render times seem to be pretty rough though.
mattclinch
how is it lit?
gsscott50@hotmail.com
the scene is lit with MR sun and Sky with 3 MR portals at the windows. The back light for the desk is just a mia shader with a self illumination value of 40,000 cd/m2.
mattclinch
that's a fairly high nit value. not used the mia shader for illumination - always found it blotchy and inaccurate. maybe try with a photometric light?
gsscott50@hotmail.com
cheers matt. ive tried with and without the light, but it seems to be the mesh that is the trouble maker. Think I will try creating a blend material and see if that works!
mattclinch
do you need the shadows from all the holes or something? if not just make the table top non shadow casting.. or invisible to FG.
