Umbrella Opening Tutorial???

Can you model the 'spine' of the umbrella, rig it, and then skin it with a cloth modifier?

I'd get the mechanical aspects working before doing the cloth modifier.

So, build and rig ONE 'spine' and work it through the full range of movement (I'm thinking a custome attribute with value=0 is closed and value=10 is opened). When that works, circle array clone it around the central 'stick'. Test to see if the rigging followed you properly after the clone.

When the opening motion works, then put a surface on the 'spine' (a number of ways to do that - clone the 'spine', move it up away from the original 'spine', then bridge them together)

Maybe a bend modifier with "angle" wired to the rotation. Some kind of massively increasing bit of math for extra realism. Something with exp() or maybe square or cube then divide by a thousand or something. Just so the line stays pretty straight until near the end.

While real umbrellas use the tension in the shell to restrain the ribs, probably better faking it, yeah.

Ok I'm getting somewhere with this.

Only problem is with cloth simulator.

I;me stting up the intial state with simulate local.

All works fine, the cloth drops with gravity and recognises the collision objects.

Then all of a sudden when i run another test, the vert groups just ping upwards and the cloth doesn't move. As if the gravity has been turned off.

?????
