thanks all for your support! Certainly nice to see some do not live in a Utopian bubble world.

I've gone ahead and updated the forum registration form to include the following text:

By entering in your email address you agree that CGarchitect may send you email updates, newsletters etc. and occasionally information on behalf of the companies that sponsor our site.

Other areas of the site included this information, but I somehow missed the forums. Once I get a little further along with the new site (working on the store right now), I will implement something that encourages people to not unsubscribe from these lists if they choose to be a member of this site. Once this is set up I will also be doing a list cleanup that will force people to make a decision. Accept ads and be a part of the site, or put up with something that allows us to monetize your use of the site.

Although parts of this thread have put a sour taste in my mouth and part of me would like to implement pop up banners, lots of flashing text, slower server access to those that feel they can't accept a simple email to help support the site.

For all of those that feel that receiving emails of any kind (sponsored or not) here is the link to be removed from our lists: http://www.cgarchitect.com/enewsletterpro/members.aspx, If you don't have a password to login, just request it and you'll be able to unsubscribe once you log in. Just understand that by unsubscribing you are NOT supporting this site.

@Ernest: I have considered a donation box, but it did not seem right to me to ask for donations for a "for profit" company, but in the context of opting out of the very things that keep this site alive, maybe that is appropriate. Perhaps on the other end of the spectrum you have to choose. Pay a monthly fee or accept ads on site and via email.

@Christian: Yes and your contributions are certainly appreciated, and along with many others, are what make this community as good as it is. Good will however does not pay my server bills, development costs and salaries.

Me too, but i also see what we (have) contribute(d) , which is IMHO the real value of this forum and as you said before, limiting the access with paid membership will decrease this virtual value by loosing many many users, but sending 30000-40000 users ads/spam will do the same in few month.

Dude, I would love to agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

For instance, this thread was posted round about the same time Jeff posted the "Juan Altieri - 3D Awards Image Making of Tutorial" Look at the amount of views from both. I think its fair to say that the majority cga users don't care about what you call "spam from cga".

This site is a very good resource for information whether you go search for it or if its emailed. You have to see cga as your colleague and not just a place to come plunder for information. Give and take man, give and take

what if The people who sign up for The additional (spam or otherwise) product vendors emails get some additional online services or a private forum To check out

instead of worrying about opting OUT how about OPTINg IN?

make a space so That The Industry sponsors have a Big reason To ADvertise at CGA

show Them That we are interested in Their products *send MORE emails*

**

not To change The subject, Totally a side note, That may not make any cents

i started a website (now defunct) about 2 or 3 months after Jeff started CGA, back in 2001, launched on 9-10-2001. made a sum Total of $140 in 3 years (or so)

The point is GUESS WHAT? IT FOLDED,

no income = no hours To donate or designate Towards maintaining This excellent website

literally CGA has helped CGA'ers from all corners (sic) of This planet To get Together and create something way Totally unique

just my point of view or perspective

lets have MORE info available from SPONSORS

keep CGA online, This is where i learned VIZ and MAX

Thanks

The larger issue in play is what, if any, responsibility we have as users of this forum in funding its operation.

The information age has made us re-examine how we value things. That process is far from complete. This thread is looking at what we are willing to pay/accept for what we consume.

I follow you Ernest... But I don't want an HP workstation, so I just deleted it. That's what happens when you receive unsolicited mail advertising products you don't need from an entirely different continent (Doesn't matter if it's an American workstation or cheap Chinese visualization).

You've replied to my post in two halves. If you reread it and take it as a whole, I'm suggesting there must be a better way to support what Jeff does for us all. I'm not suggesting cgarchitect becomes paid only, that won't work. I'm suggesting something like this might work, because people like us would be happy to contribute towards something we use everyday.

Devin

i was just Trying To suggest somewhat of a 'VIP' section

but The SPONSORS pay for it and for Those of us who would

voluntarily SIGN UP,

we would get The benefits of The sponsors Info

increase revenue at CGA, without resorting To a pay-per-view

situation, This would help keep up The Traffic flow for CGA

so That The Sponsors would have someone To market TO.

i like keeping up with what is going on in The industry

especially all of The software and hardware developments

just an idea
