danb4026
So far, this rendering has achieved its purpose for the designers. It was used to sell their initial design concept to the developers. The materials, lighting, furnishings, etc are all provided by the design team, not me. Changes are surely to be made. This rendering will eventually be used for marketing purposes. Any C&C would be appreciated to help get this into a marketing quality image.
rmccoy
The rug throws the image off for me. it looks like it need to be a much higher quality texture. The rest of it looks pretty nice
danb4026
The rug is definitely a problem, but I do not have a decent quality image. I enlarged and sharpened as much as I could, but it still looks rather bad. Not sure what else to do.
rmccoy
you could trace it with illustrator and make a vector copy of it. you could up the resolution that way.
danb4026
Wouldn't I lose the color information by using trace?
rmccoy
you can retain some of the color using the live trace feature. I was thinking you could just trace it and then maybe hand color it? either that or you could ask the manufacturer of the rug for a high res photo of it? danb4026
I just sent off an email to the manufacturer to see about getting a better resolution image. I am going to play around with illustrator and see what I can come up with.
rmccoy
Hopefully they will understand what and why you need it. It's always been a hit or miss with these types of things. If illustrator doesn't work out, you could always try and hand paint some of the details into a blown up version of the rug in photoshop.
erickdt
You can always use the eye dropper tool in Illustrator to pickup the color off of the image...
danb4026
Using trace in illustrator is something I have not done before, so there will be a learning curve. I will give it a shot and see what I can come up with.
rmccoy
could you upload your rug image?
danb4026
OK...the first image is a PS enlarged version ( I also changed the color of 2 of the flowers to purple, as per client request). The second is the original image of the manufacturer website.
rmccoy
I tried using illustrator but was unable to get any good results. So I just opened it up in photoshop, enlarged it to 4000px high, and started hand painting over it with my tablet. you should be able to get a lot of the details back in it if you try. I know the edit isn't perfect but it should give you an idea. I just used a soft round brush set between 20%-60% opacity for the whites and purples and then a hard round brush for the blacks at 80%-100% opacity to tighten the edges
danb4026
Ross...that's great! Not sure how to thank you for you efforts. I will go into PS and follow your lead. When I have something worth showing, I will repost the image. Once again, thanks for taking the time.

erickdt
The carpet does look a bit better although I think it's still missing something. I looks like more like a flat image and less like a carpet. Maybe you can add some noise to the map in Photoshop. Also, you could a a noise map to the bump map slot in MAX. You could really give it a more textural feeling by adding Vray fur (which I'm not sure you can UVW map) or using the Vray displacement modifier although I don't know if that would be an accurate representation of the specified carpet. They've already changed the pattern of it (by adding the purple) maybe you could take some more artistic license with it by giving it a heavier, almost shag, nap. I know you said that you didn't choose the colors or the furniture but generally speaking they do not make a very good composition. It's all just so vanilla. The image would be much more pleasing if there was more contrast in the coloration and texture of the various different elements. Also, the scene's lighting is coming across as generally flat. Putting a greater emphasis on the exterior lighting (sunlight coming through the window) as your main, motivational lightsource while treating the interior lighting more subtly might produce more eye pleasing results. erickdt
Try this...
danb4026
Erick, thanks.... You added the noise in PS? Initially I will go with adding noise in PS and see how that looks. If that doesn't give good enough results, I will give vrayfur a try. The carpet is not shag, its a fine nap. Yes, I have no say in the composition of materials. They have already changed the fabric for the sofas though, so I will be incorporating that into my next rendition. I see what you are saying regarding the lighting. I will go your route and see how things shape up. Thanks!
mathes
For the rug, you could take the image you have into Photoshop and work a high-res uniform carpet texture into it. This would take away the blurry effect that is happening right now and make the rug look like a rug. You may also want to consider an AO pass, so that you can add a bit of definition to parts of the image later on.
