andyH
I am having some trouble with glass creating specles or noise on an interior wall. I have tried the standard arch/design glass and the mental ray pro materials glazing, but they both create the noise. I proved it was the windows by removing them from the scene and then rendering and the noise was gone, I am using mr sun/sky and skylight. are there any super-secret tricks to solving this problem? SandmanNinja
have you tried upping your number of samples? I get noise in white, reflective spots on walls and I increase the samples to 16 or 32 for that particular texture and it generally goes away. Justin Hunt
I tend to exclude GI and or FG from gglass windows for this reason. It has the added bonus of getting more light inside the building jhv
andyH
Thanks for the replies, Justin, I havent tried excluding the glass from GI or FG, will figure out how to do that when I get home and give it a try. Sandman, my global sample quality for Mental Ray is set to 16/64 but I am not sure how you set a different sample quality on a single material in the scene. I have trawled through the material properties but dont see anything obvious. Could you point me in the right direction here please? I am using Max 2010. SandmanNinja
Hey Andy, On the material, go into the rollouts and look for "number of samples". I think the default is 8.
andyH
Sandman, the only "samples" I can find in the material rollouts is under the "Special Effects" rollout, there is a check box for Ambient Occlusion (off by default) and when switched on you can access the number of samples configuration, set to 16 by default. Is that the one you are refering too?
Justin Hunt
Might I suggest reading the PDF on the Arch& Design shader that ships with Max. There is a heap of information and worth reading. To turn off FG and GI for specific objects Select the obect, right click ->object properties -> mentalray check "Pass through" under Final Gather and uncheck "Generate Global Illumination" under Caustics and Global Illumination (GI) jhv
