Since there are several users I thought I might ask the question. Do any of you Zers have a formZ file that has a decent lighting setup for an exterior model.

Im trying to come up with one now.....If I come up with something soon I will post the file. What version of Z are yall using?

Thanks.

Chris,

Nice renderings! I've played with a dome of cone lights for faking radiosity and got decent but not great results. I'm really curious to try your/Delfoz's setup. Would you be willing to post a .fmz file with your lighting rig? It would be a big help. Thanks,

Jack

They do look nice. I've had some success with the 'light rings' as well. The balance of intensity and light color really seems to make or break the resulting image.

Arnold Gallardo's text "3D Lighting: History, Concepts, & Techniques" is a nice resource on the subject. There are several examples and explainations of these types of 'light arrays' as well as step-by-step tutorials and example files for lighting setups.

I picked up a 'used' copy through Amazon. It's also linked in CGA's Recommended Reading List.

Here's the file:

right click and save target as...

It's the lighting rig i used for my office image in the finished work thread.

I'd be very interested in seeing what you guys produce with it, and i'm SURE you'll be able to make some improvements to it.

On another note, what do you think is the future of FZ?

I personally am thinking of moving on - Lightwave is looking VERY appealing. I just think FZ has fallen too far behind in terms of lighting and rendering, not to mention animation....

It'll probably always be my favourite modeller though!!!!

Yes, the modeling is the best I've seen (compared to Max and Maya) for architecture. The rendering is too slow and the animation is worthless.

But, if they went to a plugin approach, I'd love to only have Form-Z, a plugin like Final Render, Brazil, or Vray, and a plugin for animation. I could care less about dynamics, character studios, etc.

That's my wish list. It'd be nice an simple and probably cost less than just the standard Max.

Chris,

Thanks for posting the lighting file. I'm going to try it out on a model I've been playing with, and I'll post a couple of tests if they turn out decent.

"On another note, what do you think is the future of FZ?"

Like you, I'm frustrated with the current state of rendering within Form-Z, especially when using radiosity. I'm planning to play with the Cinema4D demo to try it out, since I plan to stay with OS X. But if I were you, I'd wait until Form-Z 4.0 is released at the end of the month before jumping ship. It will open up the program to 3rd party plugins. I've posted on both the Form-Z forum and the Brazil forum requesting a version of Brazil for Form-Z (or at least a stand alone version for the Mac). If you're interested in something like this, I'd let FormZ and any renderer developers know.

Thanks again for the file!

Just a quicke on Z rendering. I've had some good luck, and u can check out my website in the next couple of weeks to see some images. So here is a few rules i use w/ renderzone.

-stay away from point lights, and use cones instead.

-don't use more than 1 light with soft mapped shadows.

-backlight things, foreground light, and detail lights

-ambient light levels between 10-20% depending on what your rendering.

-DONT use real glass. takes to long. just go with plastic or something for transparency types.

-use transparent shadows.

hope this helps!
