vertex paint - map display? aaarrg!!!!

This is driving me crazy!!! im trying to blend 2 mats on a mesh, and after going through a couple tuts, vertex paint seemed to be the answere, i paint my mask on the mesh in black and then apply the 2 different maps to the slots and use vertex color as the mask type... am i doing something or is it not possible to view the map that is suppose to be on the black painted area!!! how do i view both maps in the viewport???? what am i missing...

 

ps: i do have toggle texture display on in the vertex paint box window.
