formZ users?

i would not rush into buying version 4 when it is released. it is being released as version 4.0g0 which, if you are not familiar with this, means gamma version 0. basically meaning they are releasing it before it is ready to go to market for what they have called, 'public beta testing'. if memory serves they released versio 3.5 before it was ready to go to market, and for awhile the program was not reliable at all. users had to revert to their old versions in order to complete projects. i would wait 6 months or so before investing the extra money. unless you are lucky enough to have the family plan.

i am not saying formz sucks, it is the strongest modeling app for architecture, but that is not to say it does not lack in certain areas.

hey there edub....i was thinking the same thing. usually the zforum has a stream of postings in a day...in the past several weeks it has died down to about 3....

everyone is tired of waiting for the new release. I do agree with waiting to purchase Z after this gamma release though....every is so anxious for the 3rd party pluginz....its hard to see through the light of a new release.

Fortunetly i have been keeping myself busy with Vray. There is talk of a possible 3rd party plugin for vray into Z. If this happens, Z's market share might go up. FormZ radiozity isnt the greatest. Id love to see the integration personally....Id sign up now....

Good luck and keep busy.

Not so sure you are right...

The "talk" is more towards a standalone version of VRay, which you'll be able to import 3d models into. That would be good, since you won't be have to buy MAX (or VIZ) inorder to take advantage of VRay. But if that would be the case I hope they would be able to replicate the great matterial editor MAX offers.

Its very unlikely VRay would work a plugin especially for Z IMHO.

Actually the talk is about PlugIn renderers, not only with VRay but many others too. Not to mention other useful PlugIns. Since FormZ is now kind of open for this they try to contact many developers to make them aware of this. FormZ's ability to export modells to many different 3D softwares is long well known, one of the main reasons for FormZ's success.

but formz's market share is relatively small. just because formz contacts a company, and tells that company that they can write a plug-in so their render engine will work within formz, does not mean that company will write the plug-in.

...and even though they are on the verge of releasing version 4, they said that the information for writing plug-ins will not be available for another three-four months. in z language that is a year. lets hope that they release the plug-in information to developers before that time, otherwise render plug-ins will not be available at all for at least a year and a half.

maybe you think i am exagerating, but i have been using z for about six-seven years, so i know how their deadlines work.

still, don't let this deter you from purchasing z, great piece of software for modeling architecture.

Hey there (arkitec too. funny to see your name here also;) )

yeah, bunker mentality here - just waiting for v.4

I really hope this will be a huge improvement to formZ. I' love it for its modelling, although the rendering times can be a bit much

With the new plugin capability, hopefully we'll see a variety of render options in the future - Vray, Brazil, etc.

As far as waiting to upgrade because it's a gamma - well, I guess that's a personal preference. I wouldn't mind testing it out (I would probably not use it on a deadline ;) ). And As with 3.8, which was a gamma when it came out, there'll be a free patch for download when bugs get worked out - so even if you're not on the family plan, you'll get the patch...

I'd just use the time in between to become familiar with new tools and such until a final release comes out - then hit the ground running :gebigeek:

laterz.... :ngesleep:

FWIW they mention that plug-ins can be developed using C and C++. The "...plug-in tools and the script language will be made available to the form•Z user community in 3 to 4 months..." The User Community in my mind doesn't necessarily mean that the Developer Community can't potentially be rolling before that. Maybe I'm overly optimistic. Maybe it will even be documented. redface2.gif

  • 1 month later...

I use form z soley. Gave Max a try, but it's just to much and not user friendly at all. Great for some things, but not mostly architecture work.

I have pretty good look with Renderzone, but it does take a while. And i've never had the patience to wait for a radiosity rendering to finish. It's a joke how long that takes.

All in all it's a great program. Although, some of the lights kind of piss me off. But the imager is a life saver!!!!!!!! really!!!
