markf
Is anyone using Vray RT? I'm thinking about purchasing it. I'm reluctant to spend any money right now, but if really speeds up the workflow it would seem worth it. Also I know the introductory price willl not last forever, and Chaos Group has been very good about the upgrades. So is anyone using it and do you like it? braddewald
I have been using it since it first came out and I love it. It works really well for lighting a scene before materials are applied (because when you do it slows down significantly). You can really get the basic lighting down perfect in a scene with the ability to see the effects in real time. Its also great for tweaking something like a shader or a light. Say you have a bad reflection coming from a light but you don't know which one, you can turn them off one by one and instantly see which one is causing it. It also works well with DR so if you have a farm you can utilize all of your nodes to speed up clarity. My only problem with it is that when you render the scene outside of RT it doesn't ever look completely the same, and maybe somebody else can back me up on that if they feel like that too. Overall though, it works great and I love having it as part of my workflow.
WAcky
The new GPU based RT vids they've been showing look awesome. This is a bit of a hard decision for you and it's the decision I made when RT was released. I chose to buy on launch and save money based on the hope that RT updates will be free for a while in the same way Vray updates are free (up to a certain stage that is) Heres to hoping the GPU functionality is a free update
Jimy
It's pretty cool. Nice feedback as said on lighting especially. We've tried it on high poly scenes and it seems pretty good if a bit slow. Good on simple setups though. It's essentially just a viewport with light cache that gets better and better quality the more you wait. Dunno if it's worth the money though. markf
Thanks for your helpful replies. I will probably go ahead and get it and hope that the when the gpu upgrade becomes available it is free or discounted for existing users. They have treated their customers very well so far and I have no reason to think that will change. Plus they make some very cool stuff and keep making it better. If my amount of work had not been so severely reduced it would be a no brainer.
