Devin Johnston
I used Max all day yesterday, when I came in today and started it up I get this application has failed to start message. Any ideas as to what is wrong?
Crazy Homeless Guy
I would try deleting the 3dsMax.ini file before anything else.
Devin Johnston
I found it and deleted it but I'm still getting the same message.
Devin Johnston
I've uninstalled everything and reinstalled it and I'm getting the same error message. The only thing that was done to the machine in the last few days were some Microsoft updates, I suppose that could have affected it. Anyone know if Autodesk will talk to me without me having to pay them for tech support?
bmcgonigle
What is your Os and max version?

Dave Buchhofer
I had this happen at home with vista, can't say as i ever figured out wtf happened though as i was only using the 30day demo to patch up a little work and haven't had to use it since. Has there been any recent windows updates? Does anything show up in the event log when you start max... start, run, compmgmt.msc, Event Viewer, check the Application log and the System log.. doesn't ususally get you useful information, but it can net you something to search towards online. Crazy Homeless Guy
Try this if you are not already doing this... Open "InstallSettings.ini" in the root 3dsMax directory. Then change the useUserProfiles=1 to useUserProfiles=0. Caution though, this will make 3dsMax use only the 3dsMax directory, and not the My Documents directory. This is similar to deleting the 3dsmax.ini, but typically deleting that file fixes a lot of problems, though it resets your settings. [Least User Privilege] useUserProfiles=0 installedBuild=
JohnD
Maybe install service pack for 3ds max?
Tommy L
Do you have a restore point on windows? I never tried it, but maybe that will roll back the settings to before the windows updates. Any drive letters changed?
Craig Ramsay
Did you run System Mechanic by any chance? I had to uninstall it in the past as it messed up my Max.
