fstephens
Hi everyone I'm new here, but I have been working with Mental Ray and 3DS Max for some time. Doing a visualisation and I have a recurring issue with the MR Arch & Design Water Material using the ocean (lume) shader. The water looks good but when animation renders the reflections flickers like crazy frame to frame.I am using FG only and its an exterior with daylight system and its a 500 frames render FG map pre calculated on high set to read only Samples Min 1 Max 16 Its driving me mad, I thought it might be the loop setting in the water shader, but I switched that off and it still flickers! Any help feedback really appreciated. If you wish to look at an example movie its here Thanks Florian
WL500GP
is your FG map calculated for every 1th frame? if so you could try and calculate it for every 5-10th frame or so, set FG to draft/low and samples per pixel to 1/64-1/64 and no image output, then load the FG as read only and up the samples per pixels and render images sequence Cheers, k. fstephens
Hi K, Thanks for your reply, yes I am pre calculating the FG map every 10th frame using the "generate FG map" function in max 2010. I am aware of the typical flickering issues you get with MR - this just seems to be the water material.. Cheers, F
WL500GP
have you tried and see what happens if you exclude water from FG?
fstephens
Yes I was thinking something along the same lines, I'll render the animation again excluding the water from FG and let you know how I get on...
Bruce Hart
Hi there, I'm familiar with the GI flickering effect, but if you scrub the animation slider slowly it looks as though the waves are changing quite a bit from one frame to the next altering the reflection. I'm wondering if you have cloned a second water plane on top of the first with a different ocean lume setting (a coincident face problem) or you just need to double check the wave size/animation time settings. Cheers
nelpiper
try irradiance particles. They're flicker free but it only works for fly-throughs. It doesn't work for animated objects and cameras.
Jennifer
It is a known issue. Complain to Autodesk and mi so this can get fixed!
