Brian Smith
Was thinking some more about the recent and popular post entitled 'Arch Vis is Dead' http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/37795-arch-viz-dead.html, is and wanted to add something else about emerging industries. There is enormous potential in other industries such as medical, automotive, and military, all of which will not be as willing or able to outsource to other countries. In fact, as a member of the US military, I can personally guarantee that 3D-based training will soon be replacing a huge component of live field-based training and that 3D is going to soon explode in weapon system design as well. I can also guarantee that with the regulations we have in place, no 3D will ever be outsourced. I imagine the same is true in other countries. If you want to see a very cool example of how 3D visualization is starting to be used in the military, take a look at this video. Don't know who did it, so I can't provide credits. If you know, please mention. http://e1.simplecdn.net/3dats.onyx.video/JLENSVIDEO.wmv
EddieLeon
Very cool project. I agree Military Sim must be a great niche. My guess is that this video might have been done by Heartwood Studios. They do a lot of Military work: HWD3D.com
Devin Johnston
I'd like to know how you go about getting this kind of work.
Brian Smith
most companies like this will be required by the military to have employees to hold a Secret security clearance. i hold one because of the position I hold in the military, and it was free for me, but it generally costs around $10k I believe for a company to obtain one, because of the extensive background search and profiling that's required. if you have one, getting work at a company working on military projects is way easier. if you dont, i imagine it's much harder because you are already an expensive liability. Devin Johnston
That's disappointing, I'd love to work on some projects like that.
Kyle
I too have worked on miltary projects in the UK. It is becoming more and more popular to use 3D especially for training. In the UK there is a consortium of 3-4 large companies that divide the work between themselves. These companies then draft in the required specialists to assist with putting together the package. Contractors are brought in as and when they are needed. It does help if you are security cleared but if need be they sometimes get you security clearance for the duration of the project. Jeff Mottle
If you want to do some research on this industry and talk to the people who would likely be commissioning this type of work, go to this conference: http://www.iitsec.org/ It's "the" US conference for all things related to military sim.
