Aussie 3D group

G'day...

I think having regional contacts with fellow 3D Artists is important, especially in today's market. The internet is great - it brings together people from all over the world so they can share ideas and information. However, it never hurts to be in touch with people that are geographically near each other. There's something to be said for having someone near you. You tend to have a lot of things in common since you grew up in the same environment. Plus there's always the possibility of having face-to-face get togethers with other nearby associates.

I've been contacting people in Australia that work in/with 3D trying to get a loose collection of people that can network via email. The response has been very positive, so much so that running it via e-mail is no longer efficient. I've polled the members and the consensus is to move it to a Yahoo! Group. This allows new members to view old posts, and gives us a place to store files for WIPs, tutorials, etc.

It's not to replace the AAAI or the CGA forum, rather it's an informal collection of Aussies who all like 3d. We can chew the fat, discuss technical subjects, offer C&C for members, etc.

If you have a project that you have a deadline for and want to see if anyone in the group can help, have a techie question, want some C&C on a WIP, or have any job leads that you aren't interested in? Then make a post to the group of local artists in your same area to get some assistance.

Your participation can be zero or it can be C&C of other's work. It can be as little or as much as you want.

In order to have regular communications, I intend to make regular posts to the members on a variety of topics. New tutorials that have been placed in the download section, WIP C&C requests, reviews of books and plug-ins - you name it.

If you're in Australia, feel free to check out the Yahoo! group, or PM me for more information.

Hi again,

Just to let those Aussies that haven't signed up yet that we've got some new content on the Yahoo! Group - new members, some 3ds hints-n-tips PDFs, even 2 jobs here in Australia in the ArchViz industry.

If you're interested, use the above info to sign up at the Yahoo website.

Cheers

Hey Joel,

If you would like a more robust forum to host this, I'd certainly be willing to help. You can set up a sub-forum with your own theme on this forum if you like. It can be made visible to whomever you choose and you can moderate. I've done this for Brian Smith for his past customers and it worked quite well. The only reason I suggest it is because I've used Yahoo groups and I think they are a horrible way of communicating. Just let me know. Would only take a few min to set up here.

Yes that would be excellent. Yahoo groups is a bit impenetrable / hard to use tbh.

No worries - been talking to Jeff and I need to make some decisions and give him some info and we'll be good to go.

I hate to keep moving us around, but maybe the CGA sub-forum will be a good home.

I'll probably still keep the Yahoo! Group, just to get more people from other sources.

When the new forum area is set up, I'll advise you guys to modify your Yahoo! Group settings.

I've designed a banner for the new sub-forum here and sent it to Jeff. I've also made a new ping post to the Yahoo! Group, with a new file added to the Files area of the group.

I'll let everyone know when the new sub-forum goes live.

Just finished setting it up. If you scroll to the bottom of the forum you should see it. (Joel) Right now it's set up so that no one can see it unless they request to join the group from the UserCP and a you approve them. Then they will see the forum too. That's the best and easiest way to avoid the search indexing the posts for everyone.

I can also send an email to all of the Aussie members to let them know. There are about 1200 of them registered, although not all are active. Just let me know.

For you Aussies out there if you want to join the group, go to the "UserCP" link in the forum menu and click on the "Group Memberships". Just request to join the "Australian Association of 3D Artists" group. When Joel approves you, you'll be able to see and post on the new forum.

Joel, If you go to this same place you'll see the list of users waiting to be approved. To check if they are from Australia, just click on their username and them look at "About Me" tab under country.

If anything does not work as expected, just let me know.

Just a forethought and it's still in early beta invite only status, but I feel like google wave might be the perfect solution/tool to organize multiple people for an effort like this to cross communicate and callaborate

something to consider as the idea develops.....

Just wondering if anyone has attempted to sign up for the new Australian User sub-forum? I don't see any attempts, but this is new to me so I'm not sure.

Joel, you need to authorize everyone. I logged into your account and there are three people waiting for you to approve them. Instructions earlier in this thread on how to do that.
