Fran
Hi everyone, I have a blog at http://surrealstructures.com/blog/ that is an adjunct to my Surreal Structures web site. I have been asked to do tutorials, but wasn't keen on the idea of posting them directly to forums. I had a WordPress blog through my web host that I never used and decided that it was a good place for a tutorial. You don't need to register or give any personal information to comment, though a name would be nice. So far, there are just two tutorials, one showing how to make a towel with in 3ds Max with the Cloth Modifier, and another related one on micro-poly displacement (fryrender-related). I have also posted an article on a recent project that I thought would be of interest. I would love some feedback on the tutorials, whether they were helpful or how they could be improved. I also would love to have requests for more tutorials. I have experience with Max, Rhino and fryrender. I do plan to put up more cloth tutorials for things like blankets, curtains and pillows. Inxa
Hello Fran, Good to see you blog. Personally, do not like the design / layout. It's a bit confusing to my eye. The tutorials are good. Looking forward for more. Some of the images do not load as well. Keep it up.
Fran
Thanks for the feedback Girish. I do have a problem with my web host about inline images loading on forums. I was hoping it wouldn't be a problem with my blog though.
AndyC
Hey Fran, A little visually confusing. Might want to make it simple. After staring Max's 20 windows and 100 of buttons and numbers, simple is welcome. :-)
Fran
Thanks for taking a look Andy. I appreciate the feedback. I've removed a couple of widgets and moved some things around. I like the theme I have because it is very simple - articles in the center, site tools/info on the right, and article tools/info on the left. AndyC
Looking pretty good now Fran. Thanks for the link also!
Ricardo Eloy
Very nice blog, Fran! I kind of like the design, it's simple and straight to the point. One thing I'd consider, though, would be a picture on the top. Makes it easier to identify your blog (now that browsers have this history-thumbnail feature, it helps even more) and helps defining what is an article and what is part of the blog's structure. Fran
Thanks for taking a look Rick. Do you mean a banner image across the top?
Fran
I've added a banner image that is also a link to the main blog page from anywhere on the blog. I appreciate everyone's feedback. http://surrealstructures.com/blog/

ralopez
Hello Fran Thanks a lot for the tutorials you have posted. I will pass it along to a friend who has a blog, loves to post new material. I see you work with Fryrender. I work mostly between MentalRay and Vray. I will have a look into it. Thanks for the your blog.
Fran
Thanks John and Rafael. Rafael, the tutorial scenes I provide have been configured with a standard Max camera and materials, though my sample render is done with fry.
jophus14
Thanks Joseph and James. I'm working on a tutorial right now for a folded blanket/throw. That would be great. I was checking out your tutorial yesterday and I started playing around with the cloth modifier again and I created a comforter that i was really happy with. I attached an image of it to view. Adding a thinner blanket or a throw to it would make it look that much nicer.
Fran
Very nice Joseph. The fold at the head is a nice touch. I have a new tutorial for a folded blanket if you want to take a look. Edited October 15, 2009 by Fran added info
Fran
I posted a quick article to my blog about a simple chair tutorial I found on the Area. I've done the tutorial myself and recommend it. There is a link to the tutorial (you have to register to the Area to view it), and links to my model in .max (2009) and .obj format. Fran
You're welcome Chad. I think it's little known because people tend to not venture into the subobject level of Cloth.
