Modelling from 2D drawings

Hi Petrik,

I was tempted to take a photo of a drawing spread out on my desk but that would have been cheeky!

If you read the last couple of posts on this forum, you'll see what I mean, as I think this topic has been covered.

Just look at the drawing either on your desk or on a simultaneously running 2d package and model away.

Otherwise, build your model in 3d on cad and import as 3ds or dxf.

Cheers,

Iain

I'm not sure what previous posts have to do with my post. The ortho view post shows the house from different views. I am working from a flat floor plan. I'm not an architect that is why I was asking to SEE (rather than some lengthy explaination. I'm a visual person) how people approached it.

Here you go... filepush.asp?file=screengrab.jpg

All I was trying to say was that it's easier to model from scratch using the actual plans and elevations as reference (as discussed in the orthogonal post.)

The above was imported as 2d polylines from Autocad, extruded to the required height and then the openings booleaned.

IC, Are there any extra metric tools/plugins you could recommend?

Or do you extract from the floorplan and then use booleans for your windows based on the front views?

I'm not new to Lightwave, but I used to use Acad for my architecture.

Hi

I am Architect and Lightwave user. the same work will take about 20 mn to be done in Archicad, then export it in LW to add some detail and make the render.

Modeling from scratch this king of building in LW takes too much time!

I use booleans with the cutting blocks modelled numerically. That way they are accurately placed and sized. There are some good snap plug-ins you can get from Flay.com but I tend to find the workflow is easier just using the standard tools with numerics.

Modelling in Cad programs works for a lot of people-I just find it easier to get the small details right (especially minute bevels) doing everything in LW. Also get a much cleaner model-even using booleans.
