SandmanNinja
---------------------------------------------------------------- SHORT TITLE FOR SUGGESTION/BUG/ENHANCEMENT REQUEST ---------------------------------------------------------------- DIST --------------------------------------------------------------- DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF YOUR REQUEST --------------------------------------------------------------- A command that behaves like the DIST command in AutoCAD. The DIST command is so good in AutoCAD. I can click on 2 'verts' and it will give me the distance in a straight line as well as the X offset distance and the Y offset distance, as well as the angle between the two. --------------------------------------------------------------- WHY THIS REQUEST IS IMPORTANT TO YOU --------------------------------------------------------------- I often toggle back and forth between AutoCAD and 3ds when working with an imported DWG file. For 3ds scenes without an AutoCAD file, it would be nice to have the same information that the DIST command provides.
WAcky
yep. I use it 99% of the time in ACAD. There is a distance tool in max btw.
BobM
I agree with you one of my most used commands and would be very helpful in 3ds Max
kippu
wont "measure " tool in the utilities tab work?
SandmanNinja
It measures the distance but doesn't give you the distance on just the "X" and "Y" axis. Don't think it gives you the angle, either. James, is the DISTANCE tool the same as AutoCAD?
WAcky
Nah it's limited, like you've mentioned.
Tella
I use a simple cube to measure X and Y.

Stan Zaslavsky
in the helpers tab in max - there is a tape measure. it allows you to snap to verts and then shows the distance in between. if you do it in a front/side orientation - it will give you an accurate height measurement even wihtout snaps
SandmanNinja
the link to it from the search on scriptspot doesn't work...
SandmanNinja
I added the tape measure to my right-click menu so,i press "S", right-click, measure, vert -> vert and keep listener window open on my left monitor I guess I missed what you were saying, Stan. If I use it in a different viewport, it gives me straight-line as well as only x and only y?

Stan Zaslavsky
if you need just a vertical measurement - you are better off viewing the model in left/right/front etc viewports - then you can see that your measurement is horizontal. For example if you have just imported a 3d person and need to make sure that they are about 160cm or so tall. but if you need a specific measurement - tape helper is good. not as good as autocad dist command
SandmanNinja
ah yeah, that makes sense now - about the left/front/etc viewport. I'll play with the script.
WAcky
I never noticed this but if you use the distance tool in max and make sure you dont move the mouse after you've clicked the second point, down in the status bar it will infact give you a distance measurement as well as a Delta X, Y and Z! Interesting to note that the listener window doesn't return these values thought edit: you can move the mouse, but as soon as your cursor snaps to a point it will change the status bars readout and you will lose your measurement info.
