sygboe
Hi i'm about to purchase a Macbook Pro. i need to choose between a matte or glossy screen. My natural instinct is to go with a matte screen, so what you see is what you get, and not a reflection of my face or whatever. never worked on a glossy screen. Can anyone tell me the benefits of a glossy screen? I presume the colours will display the same on both
mkofmainchester
Hi sygboe, Glossy screens are supposed to display colours more vividly, while matte displays don't glare nearly as much. My personal experience, as well as accounts from other people, tell that most people who bought a glossy screen wish they had choosen a matte, while I don't know anyone having second thoughts the other way around. This is IMHO particularly the case with laptops when you don't always work in optimal lighting conditions. rmccoy
I second the recommendation of the matte screen. I bought my mbp around 3 years ago with the matte screen and have never wished I had gotten the glossy one. Some of my friends have glossy screens (toshiba and a mbp) and they tend to complain about them mainly due to glare. While the colors are more vibrant and saturated with a glossy screen I would highly suggest getting the matte. You will be much happier in the long run. amer abidi
Glossy screens do have a more enjoyable colour viewing experience but, as said, require optimum lighting conditions and no windows behind you whatsoever. If you want to play it safe go for matte, but if you plan your workstation and monitor location well, the glossy screen can be more satisfying at times. sygboe
I've ordered it now. Chose Matte. I went into the apple shop. I dont like having to pay an extra £50 to get an 'anti glare' screen (which is matte). It was a no brainer really. I have mirrors at home and dont need one built into my computer screen. In the apple shop all you can see on the glossy screen, is your own face and reflections of all the bright lights and whatever behind. i read something on the net about the glossy screens being easier to recycle and why its extra for matte. sygboe
15" 4 gig ram 2.8 core 2 duo NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT with 512MB plus mouse I'm going to bootcamp into xp64 for 3dsmax and autocad. (i've only previously used xp32) reason for purchase. i seem to have a collection of old pc's and a pc laptop, and one good pc. it's to consolidate to one good computer (i'm not quite a full time 3der and use it for music production too. hopefully it will be fast enough to last a while doing renderings and maybe some animations. (i plan to compare it to my old quad core)
Hazdaz
While I agree that matte is the way to go, going to a store to compare glossy versus matte monitors is probably not the most realistic environment... stores are probably gonna have tons of lights and probably a much brighter overall environment than you normally would at home or in an office, which would exasperate the glare you would get from a glossy screen. epictor.com
glossy screens tend to show colors even more 'vivid' than they should appear. if you are working in the cg business a matte screen will be the better choice. in addition, matte screens are much better to your eyes. if i recall it right, glossy screens are even not 'allowed' in offices here (not that all the firms would know or buy accordingly).
