removing reflections from mirrors

This is really funny. a mirror that is not reflecting.

A mirror is normally made to reflect everything.

You can rightclick the object, then unclick visible to reflection.

Renders faster to.

Or maybe select the mirror in photoshop, and blur it, or give it some colour, to make it reflect less.

i used a different material in the end for the mirror - which had some smoky cloudy effects inside and didnt show any reflections at all - and so the client was happy with that.

thanks for all your help

I thought he wanted a mirror, not a portal to Mordor! Haha, I love things like that. A mirror is its reflections! Well done for keeping the client happy though with such a bizarre request!

hi there,

here is an interesting request from a client.

is there a way to remove reflections from mirrors - he wants the mirror to be clear.

aside from doing this in photoshop - is there a way to exclude objects from being reflected in a mirror surface?

Really an interesting request I must say. Haven't come across one like it :D

Is quite simple: Select the object that you don't want to see it in the mirror, Right Click, Object Properties, and deselect "Visible to Reflection/Refraction".

See this picture:

Or if you use "Vray": Select the object that you don't want to see it in the mirror, Right Click, V-ray properties, and deselect "Visible in Reflections".

Is it possible to remove an object reflection only from one of the reflective objects?

As far as I am aware 3ds Max (or Maya for that matter) does not allow selective reflections. So you can't say selectively specify "this sphere object visible to reflections in Mirror 1 but not in Mirror 2".

You can specify a maximum reflection distance in Arch & Design materials, but that usually won't give you the effect you're looking for, because (obviously) nothing behind the object you don't want reflected will be reflected either.

There is a way of setting up a camera to capture what a mirror would reflect and then using that output as the 'false' reflection, but in all honesty it's a pretty time consuming and labour intensive process.

Far simpler is just to render 2 passes and composite them appropriately in post production.

Something like this:

This method does have it's drawbacks: particularly for scenes with very long render times or for complex animations. But by and large I'd imagine that it's going to be your best bet.

One of the most bizarre request I have ever heard about so far. A mirror without any reflections! Sounds really funny. Here, the client is asking to nullify the basic characteristic of the mirror i.e. reflection, and I suppose there must be a genuine reason for such a bizarre requirement.

thanks Luc - some clients expect that in virtual reality - things can appear unreal ;)

typical story

I was once told by a client "Andy, there is what's real in the real world and what's real in a CGI rendering" and my personal favorite "It needs to be more blue but less blue....."

They do come out with some funny requests don't they! But, they are always right, right? ;-)
