Tommy L
So Im waiting for design details from the interior designer on this project. They ignore every request of mine, so I figured Id take a break and put Darth Vader into their boardroom. its also my first image with Mental Ray, so MR guru's, feel free to throw advice this way. Thanks! Tom.
jinsley
awesome, a little dark, but if you touch that dimmer switch, you might get force strangled... and I think we have a new guru. Tom, you have made me very sad by saying this is your first time with MR... great work!
Tommy L
Thanks James! MR is so similar to Vray now that the transition is very easy.
ihabkal
Thanks James! MR is so similar to Vray now that the transition is very easy. Really? I always thought it was awesome but just hard to do pro work with it. unless you are very experienced...
Tommy L
well, Im lucky, I have alot of power here ijn the studio. I dont think that I could use it on one workstation. But its certainly feasable with DR.
ihabkal
That is a brilliant scene by the way, Darth fits well in there, Is there a maximum number of pcs that you can use with DR? in Vray 10 is the maximum...
Tommy L
Im not sure. I have 2 workstations and 7 nodes. Thats 9 processors (40 cores). Darth was a total after-thought. I was going to do a business man silouetted against the window.
SandmanNinja
Do you have a skyportal in the window? If so, maybe crank up the multiplier a bit. The dark wood is soaking up all the light. If you're using GI, increase the number of bounces. I use use around 30 or so bounces.
Tommy L
Yes. there are portals in all the windows. Ive been juggling parameters for around 3 days, I havent tried that many bounces, Ill give it a go. Thanks.
Ricardo Eloy
Really nice pic, Tommy! I love the photographic feel, very realistic. But... God, it's Darth Vader!!! I just laughed out loud when I saw it... Thank you for that! PS: We should do a Darth Vader Contest... placing Luke's dad in our work, the most unlikely places. That would be hilarious! Justin Hunt
Fantastic, just one thing, what is the green cast in the bottom right corner? Reflection of the window? With regards to the bounces, Photons bounces (or Trace depth) are more efficient than FG bounces. In general if you need more than 3 FG bounces its time to use Photons. I really love the wood grain Is Darth 2D or 3D? jhv
SandmanNinja
I use to hide Dreadnaught 'Mechs from the Warhammer mythos in some scenes... tiny, usually on book cases
Chad Warner
For your first time with Mental Ray, I'd say it's top notch. One of these days, I'm going to have to give it a try.

edgemaster
LOL....So like show the designer and tell them you already shown it to the main client and they loved it and are keeping it!
shaneis
I'd lose or at least reduce the chromatic aberration and smooth the head rest in the foreground. Nasty looking boardroom - you just know it's going to be the birthplace of a thousand redundancies.
tonyclifton
One of the greatest topic titles in a long time! The render is looking pretty awesome. I just would ask about the lighter border under the ceiling, I can not figure out what kind of material it is, and there is a white (reflection?) on the right side, what is it? Could you may be post your settings you have used in MR?
