Trick
...i need some source which is light weighted & ready for render. From your question I suppose you're not working with VRay, otherwise you would know how to convert heavy models to proxies to keep scene load low. If you need lightweight trees Onyx won't be the solution for you. A better solution would be Forest Pro in combination with texture mapped planes or SpeedTree in combination with GroundWiz. All this if you don't work with (and know HOW to work with) VRay of course !

jsf
Exlevel GrowFX is very good. Once you learn the interface you can pretty much model any shape of plant you want and control the polygon count. Best of all it's really affordable.
Peter M. Gruhn
I can't get GrowFX to not crash long enough to learn how to make a tree. But then, I've always had stability issues with Max, so maybe it's just me. I'd like to demo Onyx to if it is stable enough to use (for me). jackbird
I just used GrowFX on a job and thought it was wonderful. I haven't used Onyx, but I've used Speedtree, Vue, NatFX, XFrog, and hand-modeling for trees, and had by far the best experience with GrowFX. It let me handle a project brief to create a plant that isn't in any software's library (Bye-bye RPC, Vue, and NatFX), and handle client comments like "I'd like that one branch to be shorter," "keep the branches out of (but all around) this volume for animation purposes," and "that's perfect, but we need to add a sprig right there," all while working procedurally. Wind animation is a bit cumbersome, but certainly doable. Flowers, fruit, and other non-leafy things are a breeze. It does have some stability and UI issues (particularly related to multi-step undos), but the developer is also VERY responsive to bug reports and feature requests, and is working on full MaxScript access. You can also collapse the trees to mesh one they're built. At the price, you can't beat it with a stick, IMO
