Anyone using a Drobo/Drobo Pro?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone is using one of these shiny Drobo things and how they are getting on with them in a production environment.

I am starting to do more animation and my current storage is taking a bit of a battering.

It all seems a bit too good to be true (apart from maybe the price) but the ability to add drives as I need to and use some of my older drives I have lying around doing nothing seems like a very good option.

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on them.

If you use them directly connected to your machine then I think it will be ok, but if you plan on using the Drobo Share hardware to defectively make it a NAS then you should probably look at another solution. I use a Linux NAS called Openfiler and was considering what I would do if and when it fails. I was just looking at the Drobo and they have really poor reviews when used over a network. I guess they drop connections and are VERY slow.

If you are thinking about using it to share textures on multiple machines for a network render, I'd also keep looking as I don't think it will be able to handle it very well. It's too bad as it looks like a nice plug and play system. OpenFiler now has a GUI install so that should make it more attractive. It's not as simple as a Drobo or similar NAS.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks, Thought it sounded too good to be true, was hoping to keep things simple. At present it would only be connected to my machine but I am sure to want to change that in the near future so looks like I will be looking for another solution. Will have a look at Openfiler.

Cheers,

Paul

There are some big changes in store for external storage over the next few months with the adoption of USB 3.0. It would probably be a good idea to see what unfolds before jumping into something like the Drobo right now. Also with windows 7 upon us, there may be some new options and/or capabilities for drive sharing...I for one am going to let the gurus hash through it first.

Here is an example of what USB 3.0 external drives will be capable of:
