Grain!

Sorry about this possibly stupid question, but I'm still learning my way into Maxwell...

So, I've noticed that Maxwell produces grainy images... my question is: How grainy? I mean, I'm no pro, neither I have a render farm... so how good images can I get with decent render times? Is Maxwell a bad choice if I need 'sharp' images? How do you guys deal with the grain?

Thx!

How long it takes for noise to clear from your render depends on the type of scene your are rendering. Most interior renders take many hours to clear. Exterior renders clear relatively quickly. If you have limited computer resources, I doubt if you will be able to do much production work with an unbiased engine like Maxwell. On the other hand, 3rd party renderfarms can be affordable. ;)

I once read that PURE Render uses something like 8 Quads or so to render a still frame in maxwell in about 12 hours (i´m not so sure but i think it was something about that time), the results are beautiful, you can see their gallery, although not everyone of them are rendered in Maxwell, you can check the official gallery at Maxwell website and see which are.

so yes you need some PC power to get a clean result.

It varies depending on the complexity of the material, image resolution and lighting conditions and of course your computer, but, anywhere from 30 minutes to 30 months.

(You think I'm kidding but I've seen renders on the web site that took multiple months.)

I've got a 3 year old Sony Vaio VGN-FE31H with the following specs:

Processor: Intel Core2Duo T5500 - 1.66GHz (x2), 667MHz, 2MB L2 Cache

RAM: 2048MB DDR2-667MHz

Graphics: NVidia GeForce Go7400 supporting 256MB TurboCache

OS: Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP3

I know it is outdated, so intend to buy a new 2.8GHz Macbook Pro 17"!

Is Maxwell a good choice or would I get better results with VRay? considering the hardware...

I'm not looking to do hi-res images, at least no bigger than let's say 1600x900, but I do wanna do some fancy renders with lots of light/shadow effects (see Luxigon / Labtop Rendering)!

So, Maxwell or VRay?
