The 4 questions all potential clients ask.

Hi Friends,

So I went out today to market a little, and I met with two different clients, they asked the same questions as if they have rehearsed:

1- Where's your office

2- How much does a rendering cost (they want an idea of what is the fixed price for any rendering regardless of what the project is)

3- Do you have any employees

4- What are the specs of your computer

I can rationalize and find a reason for all these questions, but are these typicla questions? come on, there are artists making good renderings in their basement!

Are your clients asking the same questions?

I very rarely get asked how many employees I have, I never get asked the spec of my computer and I also raely get asked my location, as most clients have found me from somewhere. Infact the only question I generally get is the "how much for a render then". And the other question I most often get is "can I have it for tomorrow morning!"

It reminds me of the early days in games. we used to put out silicon graphics boxes whenever the publishers came round. We hardly used them but the money men seemed to think they made the games.

But who could blame them, those old blue/violet silicon graphics PCs used to look the business 15 years ago!!

my no.3 is usually

What software do you use for render

and no.4 is

If we supply you with the model, will it be cheaper?

How much? and How long will it take? are usually the only questions i get asked. Once in a blue moon a client will ask what software i use, but thats only because they have maybe had some dealing with certain software like sketchup or something... I dont believe it has any impact on their decision to go with me for work.

lol dibbers. I actually did not read the NOT until Flyte mentioned it.

I am asked,

What are your rates, can you send a rate chart.

What are the basic rates if you can't quote the exact.

What files do you need.

How much time would you take to complete this project.

I never ever get asked my location, software or how many employees I have. The only question I really ever get is ballpark pricing which I guess is pretty standard.

I had a good one today

"The building street connection is like a street in Paris. Have you been to Paris?"

Uhhh...I can't afford to go on trips to paris...

I have to say that if I was asked those questions, it was raise serious red flags. You know they are going to be a royal pain if they are already checking out what cache you are running. Sounds like they have been burnt in the past or are reading from a script from the intern that knows a bit of 3D. Next time you go and buy a flashy car, would you ask what computer spec it was designed on? Erm, no! Your work should speak for itself, if they don't like it and/or they don't like working with you they can go somewhere else, simple as that.
