himark
Anyone know of a .dwg importer to Maya?
Jeff Mottle
Hey Himark, Have you tried Okino? They have Polytrans for Maya and although it does not support DWG it does convert from DXF which can be saved out in AutoCAD. http://www.okino.com/conv/pt4maya.htm Rhino will let you save an OBJ from an imported DWG. They have a 25 saves trial that can be downloaded here: http://www.rhino3d.com Might also want to take a look at Crossroads 3D. It's free and works pretty well from my experience, though I've nver used it with Maya. http://home.europa.com/%7Ekeithr/Crossroads/index.html Well hope that's what you're after. I've never heard of a utility that imports direct to the proprietaty Maya format. Just OBJ.
Guest mwaychoff
I have done a project converting 3D AutoCAD to Maya also. PolyTrans is definitely the way to go. However I recommend using the 3DS out from AutoCAD then use PolyTrans to create your OBJ. This way you maintain texture libraries and hierarchies. However your surfaces become triangulated and have to be tesselated and materials re-mapped in Maya. So a large poly file is going to take time to convert. Good luck. Minguez
Also, if you export from AutoCAD as 3DS, you can import 3DS directry in to Maya with a plugin that can be downloaded for free from AliasWavefronts site. It is called 3Ds importer and can be found inside the community, under downloads/plugin.

makai
Maya 5 opens native dwg. ...hmm, not that it helps you (if you had it you wouldn't be asking :^) I have also had some success with Okino. You can use command line translators to go dwg2dxf, dxf2obj then open in Maya but it is likely you will have spagetti that way... |\/| /\ |
