Bitmap Reference Scaling Problems in 3DS Max Design 2010

Hi Folks,

 

I'm new to max and am having problems scaling my bitmap reference images. Whenever I am applying a bitmap as a material to a plane for reference purposes the resultant image comes out tiled several hundred times. I've been trying to play with the display configuration in the preferences section to no avail. I also tried adjusting the width and height in the coordinates section of diffuse material editor and had some progress but still can't scale the image enough to get rid of the tiling. Importing autocad files with reference images have the same tiling problem too.

 

Does anybody have suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong or what might be causing this?
