AJLynn
I have a small painted/enameled box that small cigars came in and I'd like to reuse it for something but of course it had a decidedly non-decorative warning sticker about tobacco and birth defects on it, so I soaked it in hot water to get the sticker off and now it has a decidedly non-decorative smudge of glue that I can't figure out how to get off without scratching the box. Any ideas?
STRAT
white spirits usually work a treat. but i dont know what you americans call it. we say white spirits or turpentine or paint remover (or even neat alcohol will do).

AJLynn
Neat alcohol as in Scotch with no ice? Hmm. I'll also look for Goo Gone. Thanks.
3dway
zippo lighter fluid. Peanut butter. Anything oily will keep from sticking to the surface, then smudge it around. When it can't stick to the surface, it sticks to itself and balls up.
STRAT
yeah, a bit of a waste, granted.

DavidR
methyl hydrate. Get it at any hardware store. It is highly volatile, so it evaporates in seconds, leaving no residue (of itself), no smell, etc., like paint thinner does.

Tommy L
So will any of these ideas get the old city sticker of the windshield? Thats my least favourite thing to do all year.
erickdt
Isopropyl alcohol AKA rubbing alcohol will work very well for getting that off without risking damaging the finish of the box. We use it to clean almost everything in the tradeshow biz (except flame polished plexi glass). And yes it will remove the goo from your registration sticker on your windshield. Crazy Homeless Guy
I would try peanut butter fist since you only have to walk to the cabinet, and I am pretty sure it is not going to damage anything. Peanut Butter works great for getting gum out of hair too. ....the oils break down the gum. But Goo Gone is a must to keep handy.

AJLynn
"Peanut Butter Fist" would be an excellent martial arts film. I don't want to try peanut butter first - I imagine it being too abrasive and scuffing the surface.
Sawyer
WD40 is wonderful for this. As a homebrewer who recycles bottles I know one of the best solutions for removing beer labels is Oxyclean.
Ray
I third the Goo Gone suggestion. That stuff works.
Lester_Masterson
I'll vouch for Goo Gone as well. But I couldn't stop thinking of the Simpson's episode where Lisa gets Gum in her hair, and everyone has a remedy....all bad.

Tim Nelson
Goo Gone rocks! I used it to get a pesky sticker off my laptop. And for more hardcore usage, Goof Off is incredible. It will get just about anything off of anything, but probably not good for finished surfaces. One of my favorite uses for it is cleaning thermal paste from cpu's. amer abidi
Thinner (paint remover) will take it off in 2 rubs. Now lets go look for that Simpson's episode...
