3ds max export

It all depends on what software you want to end up in, and what elements you want to retain....for instance.....

.3ds file retains material assignments, lights and standard cameras, but no layer support....good for export to most applications (sketchup, formz, autocad)

.dwg file retains layer info but drops material assignments, cameras, and lighting info)

.fbx file exports textures along with the geometry, retains layers, lights, cameras (with the exception of sketchup I believe only supported by autodesk applications.....best for importing to and from revit, and out of sketchup, but won't go into sketchup)

  • 2 weeks later...

I am unable to view my model with the any materials that were applied with 3ds max.

My work flow:

1. Created 2 primitive types (flag pole with flag)

2. Applied UVW Map to each mesh

3. Converted both to Editable Poly

4. Created 2 seperate materials and gave them a numerical ID

5. Assigned the IDs to the correct mesh objects

6a. Export to TVM (Skin)

6b. Export to TVM (Physique)

The resulting model is still white within the model viewer...

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong!?!?

Thanks!

Sounds like fbx is what I am looking for I just want an easy way to reuse some objects in various projects same sofa in 2 different interiors for instance. Many thanks.

If you're looking to just use it in multiple max files, select the sofa (all objects if more than one), and go to "File --> Save Selection" (and by 'file', I mean the big blue button thing in 2010). Then just save it as a .max file. When you want to import it into another scene, use "File --> Merge" (which, in 2010, is actually under the 'import' section) and it'll come it exactly as it was in the old file.

You can also use the VRML/WRL format will will also take simple transitions/rotation/scale animations. The only drawback I have come across is that it doesnt like textures that have been cropped in the max material library.

If you have amended with UVW unwrap then your fine
