markf
I have noticed something that doesn't seem correct. Perhaps I have my Max preferences incorrect. I have been using what I believe to be a linear work flow. I'm not sure if that is part of this. Attached is a screen shot showing the same RGB values in the Photoshop color picker and the Max material editor color selector. You can clearly see that the colors are not the same. When I render in Max the rendering appear the same in Max as they do when opened in Photoshop. I was given specific RGB values to use for a wall color. When I input those values into the diffuse slot of the Max color selector, the resulting color in the rendering is not very close. Much lighter and less saturated than it should be. Just as shown in the attached screen grab. If I make a map file in Photoshop and fill it with the color I want, then apply that as a map to an object in Max, it renders the correct color. Why doesn't the Max color selector RGB values produce the same color as using the same RGB values in Photoshop? Also attached is my Max gamma settings. Thanks for any help with this. kippu
your input gamma 2.2 is affecting the color selector , which means all the colors will also be in 2.2 gamma ,photoshop is in gamma 1 , hope that makes sense?
Stephen Thomas
You have to use a VrayColor map instead. Change the gamma correction from 'none' to 'specify' and set the value to 2.2, now pick your desired colour. Change from 'specify' back to 'none' again and you will see the colour has become darker, this is the linear equivalent to the gamma corrected colour you just chose. You can either do this by placing the VrayColor map into the diffuse slot of your material or I usually just keep a VrayColor map open in the material editor to use as a kind of colour calculator, then just copy and paste the resulting swatch back into my materials. Don't worry, it's a lot quicker in practice than I've made it sound!
markf
Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure how you knew that I use Vray. I will try the process that you suggest. I'm not sure how people without Vray deal with this.
Stephen Thomas
Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure how you knew that I use Vray. Actually I didn't, just a lucky guess!
