M. Steadman
I have a question for all. What web creation program to learn first? Dreamweaver, Flash/Macromedia, Fireworks, Director,...? The reason for my question is that I am interested in adding more flare and interactivity to my own 'static' website. Lets hear what you are using and why? John Dollus
Flash would be the fastest for you IMO. ColdFusion and Director add some great development features but are really overkill unless you plan on offering web development as a service instead of just for your own site. Diego Rosales
From my point of view (I have used both DW and flash), I believe it is much better to work with dreamweaver first, because you learn this exact-pixel-resolution-size-web thing that you will need to know in order to get nice results from flash. I learned flash first, and I used the same mind-scheme from Illustrator (since both are somewhat similar), which is a mistake. You can get an idea about this by seeing flash sites that have badly anti-aliased text and graphics, to the point that you cannot read anything. Also, you should learn some basics about navigation and html before going into flash. Maybe this can help you get an idea of what I'm talking about. http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20001029.html Anyway, I'm summarizing my experience. Maybe yours is different. Good luck, /Diego
mzagorski
I would agree and say to learn Macromedia Dreamweaver MX etc. first... at least before Flash. Flash is cool.. but only if you can handle the basics, and unfortunately.. quite a few web designers have poor execution of Flash projects. Tip 1 - Use technology where technology is required! Dont just use something like Flash for the sake of it... On the other hand - if your as good as these guys --> www.2advanced.com then good luck They do some damn nice work. siliconbauhaus
hmmm...both at the same time and fireworks as well I'd say go for flash for reasons other than just interactivity. For starters, a well planned out site will load faster than one in html. You no longer have to reload an entire page every time you go to a new section. Your images are more secure than in html. Dynamics can create a site that weighs virtually nothing... my mates site here stream silver this site is about 10k and dynamic.
M. Steadman
Thanks for your input and opinions everyone. Now, I just have to make time to follow up on my research. That is the difficult part of my day. I have a number of demo CD's from the CG mags, but no time. Cheers
Crazy Homeless Guy
dreamweaver and fireworks. flash can come later, but flash is just a plug-in. you need to understand html and graphics compression before moving onto flash. imo most people use flash because it looks cool, not because it actually help to convey information, or navigate the site. r2
IMO you should learn the basics of html. dreamweaver is good for helping you learn this knowledge. this allows you to understand how the web functions with simple html before you go on designing pretty pictures that waste bandwidth. garethace
Here is a cool link that shows, how some people have tried to cut corners, and just to follow the basic format of some very well known corporate portals. http://www.pirated-sites.com/archive/ Engagement Design Essay: http://www.animatrix.com/bydesign/ Good web design/graphic artist web site: http://www.idiocase.com/ui.html [ May 16, 2003, 09:27 AM: Message edited by: garethace ]
garethace
I did come across this very new idea about teaching people gradually how exactly to deal with designing/running/building their very own web identity/portal site. http://www.digitaldesignscotland.co.uk/home_frame.htm
