LuckyST
I'm working on this hangar, and as u can see it's coming along quite nicely... but I'm afraid the look of the "grass" around it spoils it. This is just wip, but I have no idea what to do with the grass fields around it once the rest is done. of course I'm gonna add trees here and there, but it's still going to look flat. (I use max&vray) thanks for your help. (also a tip on the road would be welcome as well )
kippu
try getting a photograph and composite it using that

(also a tip on the road would be welcome as well ) The first problem is the size of your grass map - its also not very seamless, so it makes it look a little fake. I reckon if you fix that, add some nice plants, rocks and trees it will look great.
LuckyST
rocks? never tried adding those. any good example of how rocks "should look like"
BVI
I supposed its relative - we are in Africa - so our landscapes look African - hence rocks. Maybe grab some reference photos of the area, and then match that?

LuckyST
wow! that's awesome! is that grass 3d, or photoshop? the area looks mostly like this... it's pretty dull even on photographs http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d0/Autocesta_A11_%C4%8Dvori%C5%A1te.jpg I've found this guy's blog, and I wonder if anyone knows how to make grass like this http://www.myszko.com/3D/Stills/NormandyRoad.jpg more of his work ( http://www.myszko.com/?page_id=86 ) Edited December 12, 2009 by LuckyST
BVI
The grass is all geometry. Maybe you could make a large map - with patches of brown and green - you might also want to deform the terrain a bit (so its not totally flat), Good Luck! pipjor
read up on "blend" and "composite" materails and that will get you there..
chow choppe
i would not suggest a 3d geometry for grass for this kind of camera angle It will still look all flat. The images that other people have attached in this threa, if you notice, are eye level and close upimages. 3d grass looks nice in that. But for an aerial view try mixing 2 - 3 maps using a procedural map like noise or smoke for mask or maybe you can make 1 on your own in photoshop. Try it. ur tiling will go away once u play with mix maps/blend materials. Hope that helps Thanks
LuckyST
thanks! great advice. I tweaked a bit with composite, and the results are astonishing. here's a test render I made... any other good advice ?
CJI
Your grass lokks much better now. well done. so how did you do it then just procedurals? i think your road may be a bit shiny, unless its wet then i would probably be wrong haha.

Added a displacement with the "satelite map" in the slot. That created some relief in the ground plane. I then edit polyed it, and painted on some more relief in the plane. max materials: 4) I then used "composite" to make a texture that would have the satelite image as the base, with high res grass on top of it as the difuse. I also added grass "bump map" to the material @400 to add it some more noise. here's a image of the settings as for the road... didnt get to tweek it back then. Now it's all tweeked out. I've even added some trees... Edited December 13, 2009 by LuckyST
Jon Berntsen
Hi Lucky. Sorry to bump this thread, but would you mind sharing the bitmaps that you used? I'm amazed. I'd be very grateful. It looks so easy, but there's always a challenge getting the terrain look right on these huge scale view projects. Thanks!
