Michael J. Brown
Okay, I'm absolutely stomped. I just had my machine re-imaged and am restoring all my preferences and settings. Yes, I'm a seasoned veteran, but for the life of me I cannot find the toggle (or perhaps some .ini default) that controls whether or not Max assigns unique colors to each successive scene object created. I never had to do anything in the past to get it to make each object a unique color. But now everything is getting assigned one monochromatic color. I know there's a simple solution. Can someone help me out here? (I'm using Max 2008, btw)
Sawyer
Create a box (any obj will do) Click on the color swatch of that box Click on the "assign random colors" box. Should do it
Matt McDonald
I've had that same problem only for a lot longer than a day or two! Checking the assign random color does no good. Any other suggestions?

Should do it Works for me, but I had to double click on the color swatch for the box.
Michael J. Brown
Create a box (any obj will do) Click on the color swatch of that box Click on the "assign random colors" box. Should do it No dice. This was the first thing I looked at. And for each item I create, the "Assign Random Colors" box is already checked.
Michael J. Brown
Okay, I pinpointed the reason why this is happening. It's because I'm using the DesignVIZ UI default settings, which forces all newly drawn object's colors to correspond to the current layer - regardless of the toggle within the Object Color UI. To re-enable the random color assignments, go to the General tab within Preferences and uncheck Default to By Layer for New Nodes.
