Peter M. Gruhn
I've been using Cut in Editable Polys lately and pretty much enjoying it. Except... it likes to crash. Makes me sad. My meshes aren't the best, but they aren't all scrambled up bad. I try to keep missing things and overlaps out. Lots of high edgecount verts though. I don't have a good feel for what the tool is doing behind the scenes and how that causes it to mess up. I notice that it is always searching for "where might this cut end up, what faces would I make if he clicked the button RIGHT NOW?" I wonder if doing that it makes for infinite or zero "somethings" that cause badness. And if so... how does knowing that help me ;-). Looking for tips for helping cut behave itself. Some things I'm working at along those lines: Delete extra faces first. for example, I'm trying to cut the footprint of this building out of the terrain. Rather than do the cut first and then delete, I'm taking all the central faces out so I'm cutting much closer to a hard edge. Sometimes I've detached part of the mesh, cut, and reattached. Use edges and Connect when possible instead ;-).
odouble
You can detach the footprint of the building as spline and use the shapemerge compound object to imprint the spline on your terrain. I usually make a copy of my terrain before I perform the operation;)
Peter M. Gruhn
Yeah, I tried using shapemerge the other day for the sidewalks and it went much better than I remember shapemerge going before. I like to clean up the extra verts, but that's easy.
