DavidR Posted January 10, 2010 Share Posted January 10, 2010 It allows you to set hsph subdivs and interp samples separately from global subdivs, usually to smooth out a material that otherwise looks too grainy; it's usually used as a cheat to reduce render times, but I generally avoid it because it sometimes looks awful, and because you shouldn't use it for animations.
