General Salary Question

I tried to post this in Salary and Industry surveys but could not start a thread. Hope this is the right section. I have looked many times at the old 2006 salary survey but have a more specific question. What do you guys think is the going yearly salary for an artist with about ten years experience with a very strong portfolio?. Say in a big city like New York, Boston, Chicago or somewhere in California with one of the bigger studios.

Definitely a jack of all trades. I don't have a portfolio online. Just really trying to get a feel for salary levels. I never seem to know what amount to ask for in interviews. I am guessing the ball park is between $60,000 and $80,000.

I know in NY and California this salary would not got too far. I wonder if their salaries are higher in our field taking into account the cost of living. I am guessing probably not.

Bad time to be looking. There are more applicants than jobs and its a case of take it or leave it. Unless myou have something unique enough about your skill set that makes a (big) firm want to hire you then just sit on your talent until they get busy enough to justify your salary requirement.

I am not really looking at moving at the moment. A new year has started and I guess it got me thinking about the future.

I have been hearing that several large arch firms have closed their doors, let go of their in-house visualization dept or cut their design team because of the market right now. That's pretty scary being that we rely on these firms for revenue.

That is scary stuff. I may be wrong but I thought there was a very slow turn around happening for Architectural Visualization companies. I guess it's best to wait a couple of years and see how things pan out.

My thought is still that '10 will be the worst year for architecture. Even if the market picks up soon it will take a while for jobs to reach firms. Most firms were working from their pre-existing jobs last year and they didn't get much new work last year.

Can I ask you have ten years of experience of 3D arc business and you don't know what architects get paid ?

Seem a little strange.

You hit a level in the 3D arch business and if you get above 50,000 your in a minority.

Seriously very few jobs are paying a lot these days.

As somebody said earlier, if you have a job in the business your doing very well.

In Ireland 2/3 of the architects are out of business, and if the architects are out of business and they give 3D guys all the work over here, your out of a job.

Hand to mouth existence at the moment.

Take what you can get, and what you get will not be too glamorous at the moment. Do it and paid the bills and get on with life, it's too short, trust me.

Your right, I didn't know exactly what architects got paid. I don't know why that is so strange. I knew ball park the sort of wages they had but was not sure of specifics. I was not asking about Architects anyway, sorry for the confusion.

You are right the architectural visualization industry is horrible at the moment but I noticed that some of the bigger companies are still hiring every now and then.

It sounds brutal in Ireland, fingers crossed over the next couple of years it will turn around.

Thank you everybody for your advice. It looks like from the general consensus that $40-60000 is a very rough bracket which is good to know.
