ahbtsang
Hello, I'm just wondering if there is any software that can use 3ds max files to create real time walk through/ fly through for architectural presentations? I've seen someone importing a 3d model into Crysis game engine, but is there any more professional way? BTW I'm a student, so don't have much budget. Thanks in advance
BrianKitts
I don't think you'll find anything professional without a budget. Quest3D would be the most professional way to build exploratory environments, but thats 10k. You might want to check out Unity, it's a free game development tool that would do what you're after. http://unity3d.com/

JonRashid
The Unreal engine is also free at the moment. http://www.unrealtechnology.com/case-studies.php?ref=cowboys-stadium
artzfx
Unity works nicely for architectural walkthrough's. It supports real time reflections and shadows. The nicest and most efficient results still come from lightmapping the scene however they have BEAST lightmapper included for Unity v3.0, so keen to see how that looks. Bwana Kahawa
If you have access to ArchiCAD, the Virtual Building Explorer plugin is okay for quick output too.
ctk111
I've been looking into real time for years and I've experimented with most of the engines out there. When you factor in quality and cost the Unity engine has completely changed the game. I think Unity will put an end to quest, virtools, etc. Pure game engines such as Cry and Unreal is a different story. IMO there would have to be a real exception to go that route. Every engine out there has its quirks, but Unity has worked seamlessly. The textures come in already applied and your model hierarchy/naming conventions are maintained as well. It's really very simple. Go with Unity. You won't be disappointed.
wasteland giant
this wasn't quite the 3D related thread I was looking for. Just reading about playstation 3's/Nvidia 3D vision glass and was wondering if anyone out there know which package can output to those formats? Really will be the way forward/future no? I think the next iteration of 3D software would implement this.
JonRashid
You can produce stereoscopic animations natively with Maya and need a plugin like Spatial View for 3d Max. Autodesk have already produced a white paper on Stereoscopic production. I would not be surprised if by the time XBR comes out the active shade window has the option for 3D. There are a number of products that allow you to work in 3D within Max. However they are not very robust. The NVidia solution is passive. However Asus have brought out a laptop (£1500) that has shutter glasses and works in active stereo. I have just finished writing a player which will allow users to view .wrl files on all these products in any way from anaglyph to active.
Dave Buchhofer
Neil, agreed can't wait to see what the built in light mapping can do, anything to get away from unwrapping!!
artzfx
Should be nice Dave. For any C4D users, alioscopyusa dot com just announced a New Camera Rig for MAXON CINEMA 4D for Creating Auto-stereoscopic ‘No-glasses’ 3D Content. The new Plug-in Allows CINEMA 4D Artists to Produce Alioscopy-ready Content.
