Dave Buckley
http://ge.ecomagination.com/smartgrid/#/landing_page nice little animation on the landing page for the above link. the 'pie chart' one i'm trying to recreate it, but i'm unsure as to how it would have been lit. do you think they have been lit individually and then comp'd together? or is lit as one. i personally think as one, due to the reflection on the water and the light reflection on the side of the ice, but i'm keen to here thoughts. also do you think it has been done in 3d or have i been completely fooled by clever after effects work? CJI
They're very nice. I like the idea and the way it was done. The way i would have done it would be to model and light them together but then render them as seperate passes to gain more control for later on. Thats what it looks like to me, The shadowed sides of the cutaways seem suspiciously evenly lit.
Dave Buckley
i've remodelled it, just really struggling to get the water segment looking so nice. the other parts are easy-ish to do. tube with 45 segments, split into 3 larger segments. tesselate top polygons on each larger segment, soft-selection to create terrain. apply materials using multi-sub object. thats all it is but that water has got me. trying to use the a&d water but it just ain't giving me that water box type look
CJI
Have you tried using a different shader for the water below the surface and fake rippling water on the top with another shader? That water box look is quite nice although i would imagine there is some heavy post work on it, especially the caustics and light beams. Actually they are travelling in a different direction than the main light in the scene aren't they?
Dave Buckley
well thats kinda the approach i'm taking, i've got 9 segments in total. 3 larger segments, then they are split into further segments - top layer, middle layer, bottom layer, as they all have 3 different material layers. well the volume caustics are could be going in the right direction depending on whether these have been lit as a whole object or separately. hence why i posted the question and your suggestion on post also already crossed my mind. i will succeed . . . CJI
Ah...great minds and all that. haha. Would be great to see how you get on with this.
Koper
I think the 3D segments have been rendered separately and comped in after effects. and the water I think is After effects as well. Keep you're eye on the dolphins, they light up in the caustics and then just when they get to the telephone pole they swim out from underneath the caustics layer, the light just cuts off of them. You'd be surprised what one can do in AE
Matt Sugden
That's a lovely looking animation (thought they could have at least added a waterfall, talk about lack of effort) , are you gpoing to share yours when it's done dave? I'm intruiged as to what your working on.
Dave Buckley
i'm not really doing anything with it anymore it was more to prove to someone that max was capable of producing such stuff here's a screen shot of a rough version of it
CJI
I like the little Dolphin on the path. Swim swim. Did you ever get the ocean to work reasonably enough?
jonnyfiasco
I'd love to see a render of it.
Tommy L
http://ge.ecomagination.com/smartgrid/#/landing_page i personally think as one, due to the reflection on the water and the light reflection on the side of the ice, but i'm keen to here thoughts. I think these two highlights demonstrate more than one light source. I think its all done in 3d exept the moving shark and the smoke.
pixelperfectg
Neat animation/graphics. Thought I'd take a stab at creating the water section: For the volume caustics I just used a projector volume light. I then rendered out the volume effect in a separate pass and added it in post.
