ivanjay
Does a sky portal go inside or outside of my windows for an interior scene?
Tommy Burns
I was just reading about it there myself it goes just outside your glass
Dave Buckley
doesn't really matter as long as it covers the window space, always better to have it outside the glass though, although if you check 'from outdoors' for the shadows it will make your scene darker if i remember rightly. personally i used to hide my glass whilst i calculated my FG map, then unhide it for the render. i also make my sky portals nearly completely transparent to stop the mega exposed window spaces. hope it helps

I believe (and can be totally incorrect here) that you check from outside if you are looking at an exterior view (outside of a building) and you want to see the interior lit a bit through a window etc.

Dave Buckley
sorry to break it to you but that's not actually what it does just checked in the help and found this From “Outdoors” When on, casts shadows from objects outside the portal; that is, on the side away from the arrow icon. This is off by default, because turning it on can significantly increase render times. so basically if you have a tree, then sky portal, then window and you are inside the room, it will cast shadows from the tree into your room without the need to put the sky portal behind the tree hope that helps
Dave Buckley
which also makes sense as to why my room went dark as it was casting shadows from a wall outside the building
