Mr Sky and Background images

I am working on a project using 3D Max 2009. I am utilizing the Mr Sun and Mr Physical Sky and metal ray render part of the program. I have added a background image to mr sky and a background image to my ground plane. The ground plane image is a aerial perspective. I need to rotate the model and scale the model so it fits on the site. I've tried everthing and cannot get the image to show up - the sky or the ground plane.

Note: When I render, the images do show up.

 

1. How am I suppose to know if the sky is in the correct position? Trial and error?

2. How am I suppose to rotate the model in place of the aerial if I can't see the image?

2. Is it possible to get the images to show up in the viewports?

3. Is there another way of doing this? Am I going about this the wrong way?

I appreciate any help anyone can give me!!

click show map in viewport for the material that uses the image

 

adjust te output amount of the background image to make it show up when using photographic exposure controls

 

also do the tutorials that ship with max

 

also do searches on this very forum to find the answers you need :)

 

there is so much info on here and from the questions you have asked, it's quite clear that you are a new user of max right?

 

help guide/tutorials/google search/various blogs/forums - use them, hope it helps

that was probably quicker than the length of time it took you to sign up so you could ask on this forum. and i am by no means saying you shouldn't have signed up for the forum (it's great) but google is your friend

I have actually been using 3D max/viz for about 7 Years (off and on) and have been modeling and rendering with other programs since I got out of school 12 years ago. I'm an architect and I dabble in 3D when needed for our office. I am trying to "step it up" a level but when you only do 5-10 renderings a year it's hard to keep up with the CG world. I usually use photoshop to apply the images but I want to learn to do it in max.

I use google a lot and it has helped me in ways I couldn't imagine but I really got frustrated when I could not get my image to show up im my viewport.

 

Again, my images show up when I render so output is set correctly. I did the 3d max tutorial and also the several other on the mr sun and sky subject but it doesn't say anything about it showing in the viewport.

 

My Steps: (same steps as all tutorials tell me to do but no image in viewport)

I did click "show the map in the viewport" but it still does not show up. Basically, I instance (copy) the physical sky when I added it as an environment map. then instanced it over to my materials. In the mr physical sky parameters I added an image to the sky and Horizon and Ground. Once I added the image I went in and clicked the "show map in VP". Nothing happened. When I went back to the image, the "show map...." was off. After much back and forth, it goes off after I leave the sibling image back to mr Phys. sky.

 

Everyone (other forums, posts, tutorials, etc.) talks about how the image doesn't show up when rendered. I can't get the image to show up in my viewport/workspace. The only way I know how to is remove physical sky totally. Maybe thats the answer I've been looking for the whole time?
